Georgia vs Scotland

, KO: 17:00 Nov 16, 2023, Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena, Tbilisi
Scotland

SCOTLAND have of course already qualified for the Euro 2024 extravaganza and are now in the luxurious situation of having two dead rubber games to play in the qualifiers.

Which is just as well because the thought of having to go to Tbilisi and get points from Georgia would be enough to break a Tartan Army footsoldier into a cold sweat.

Scotland had been going great guns in the qualification games after an unprecedented five match winning run and they could count themselves unfortunate to lose in Spain after a highly-debatable goal by disallowed by VAR.

However, they have actually lost three games in a row although two of those were friendly defeats to England and France who are almost certainly the best two nations in Europe at the moment.

They infamously have a dreadful record in Georgia with both defeats going a long way to derail previous Euros qualification attempts.

But the former Soviet nation have actually been something of a disappointment here. with an appalling 7-1 home thrashing by Spain handing them a huge reality check.

However, Scotland have injury worries with keeper Angus Gunn and key left-sided defenders Kieran Tierney and Andrew Robertson both missing, along with Aaron Hickey.

How the bookies view it

Scotland have been backed all week and are favourites here at 23/20 with William Hill. Georgia can be backed at 13/5 with Coral and the draw is 23/10 with bet365.

Recent head to heads

Scotland have twice lost to Georgia in 2007 and 2015 which has ultimately cost them a place at the Euros. However, they played a rain-soaked and much-delayed game at Hampden in June and Scotland comfortably won 2-0.

Players to watch

Georgia's star man is world class Napoli playmaker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and he is 11/4 to score anytime with Paddy Power.

John McGinn won his 60th cap in the loss in France as a sub and has an impressive record of 17 goals from midfield. He's in excellent form for Aton Villa at the moment and is 13/2 to score anytime with Paddy Power, which looks generous.

Anything else catch the eye?

Scotland have no pressure on them now and can go and get the monkey off their back with a win in Tbilisi.

The Georgians have actually been very disappointing in their group. Norway blew a chance to beat them away and Spain rattled seven goals past them.

Steve Clarke's side should have learned plenty from playing England, Spain and France in recent games and Georgia are nowhere near that standard as long as they stop Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from getting the ball.

No one is suggesting Scotland are world beaters or anything, but they have proved they are more than decent during these qualifiers and with Georgia waiting for their play-off place earned through the Nations League, back Scotland to also score at least two goals against a defence that isn't watertight at 13/10 with William Hill.
