I decided on avoiding the final day of Aintree after having a pretty poor day on the Friday.
After seeing the results it was probably for the best with some nice types like Edwardstone and Flooring Porter getting turned over and my main fancy in the national getting turned over in the straight to finish 2nd against a 50/1 shot.
Sometimes if you’ve the feeling that it’s going to be a bad day you are better of going with your gut and keeping your money in your pocket..
Mondays a new day and I fancy a couple of runners at Pontefract.
These types are young and far from the finished article so it’s worth noting to keep the stakes within reason if you are deciding on having a bet.
3:40 Pontefract
I really fancy the chances of EY UP IT’S MAGGIE in the 3:40.
Trainer Tony Coyle isn’t a trainer I’m full of knowledge about and his figures aren’t really great either but I was taken by Eh Up It’s Maggies' last run and think she’s worth a shout in the 3:40 tomorrow under Jockey Kevin Stott.
She was last seen at the Doncaster meeting at the end of last month where she broke well to lead the pack down the straight before slightly fading in the final furlong. She still kept on well under pressure to land 4th that day and that was her first run since October last year so that will definitely have brushed away any cobwebs.
Her previous run was over 6f, my selection tends to run over the 5f so the combination of being dropped back to her preferred trip and also having a recent run under the belt could see her go close.
3:05 Pontefract
David O’Meara’s 3yr old AUTUMN FESTIVAL wasn’t up to much at all on the AW when tried over different trips and multiple tracks including Southwell, Chelmsford and Wolverhampton.
A switch of surface to the turf and being upped in distance to the mile seen Autumn Festival in a completely different light than to what we seen on the previous runs.
Autumn Festival led the pack up the straight and had most of the field off the bridle chasing a couple of furlongs out. She kept on well and in the end won with plenty in hand over the rest of the field.
That win results in a 7lb penalty. With Danny Tudhope keeping the partnership intact, if she’s able to reproduce the same quality of run as she did at Redcar I can’t see the 7lb penalty stopping the double.
Good luck
