Racing tips: Old timer The Unit can roll back the years at Doncaster

For a Thursday, the racing is really quite good. Despite there being some good races to watch, only one horse really stood out to me as good value.

At the age off 11, THE UNIT is on a downward spiral as he is coming towards the end of his racing career. However, in recent runs, he has shown enough of a spark to suggest he can still win races, and can win off his current handicap mark of 120. Obviously, on older pieces of form, he is thrown in off his current mark, but he's simply not as good as he once was. But at the current odds available, and based on his form, I think he is a solid bet in this contest.

The ground has often been key to this horse, and today he will get those conditions of good ground in the description, unless there the weather forecast is totally wrong and we get heaps of unexpected rain. I was drawn to his run last time out at Wincanton where he was held up off the pace, but ran on well to bridge the gap that was between him and the leaders when he was turning for home. The manner in which he stayed on to grab 3rd that day suggests this track will be right up his street, as the long straight allows horses to build up ahead of steam and stay on strongly, and the fact he has good course form suggests this also.

Brian Hughes is a noticeable jockey booking, which is an obvious statement as he is up there for being the best jockey in the country. However, Alan King doesn't use him all too often, in fact only one time in the last five years they have partnered up, and that resulted in a win. Brian is riding out of his skin as per usual, so you'd think he will be ridden with confidence.

The opposition in this race have questions to be asked, especially some of the more fancied ones. Road Warrior seems to be best when racing at Sedgefield, so will have to prove he's as good away from that track before I get involved with betting on him for future races. Zalvados will be well backed in my opinion, due to the Fergal O'Brien connection, but ideally he'd want it softer, so can also be dodged.
