Racing Club v Tigres, Saturday, 11.15pm BST

RACING CLUB have made a pretty poor start to the new campaign as they are only 10th in the league and already knocked out of the Copa Argentina at the hands of minnows Tristán Suárez.

They've won just one of their last five matches in the Primera Division and failed to even score against Velez Sarsfield last time.

Perhaps most worryingly for manager Luis Zubeldía is the fact his side have won just once at home this term. They may have only lost once as well but four draws just aren't good enough.

Goals have been at a premium at Estadio Presidente Perón – four scored in half a dozen matches – and they've fired three blanks.

Tigre have been much improved this year and are up in 12th place thanks to two victories from their last three.

It's their Copa Libertadores form which has perhaps been the most impressive though as after making it out of their group, they have a first-leg advantage over Olimpia in their last 16 tie.

Their record away from home has been a bit hit and miss – three wins and three losses from their last half dozen in all competitions – but the positive is that they are scoring plenty of goals.

They netted two at Colon and Velez Sarsfield and five at Libertad. That should stand them in good stead tonight against a team who are struggling for a cutting edge.

Racing Club's form doesn't warrant them being an odds-on shot, so with their price trading around the 1.98 mark, I have to make them my lay of the day.

    Aston Villa v Chelsea
    Saturday May 11, 12.45 GMT
    Live on Sky Sports Two

Chelsea’s wait for a guaranteed top four spot was extended on Wednesday as Tottenham hit back twice to earn a draw. While The Blues would have wanted to wrap it up before the weekend in order to field a fringe squad ahead of the Europa League final, the fact they didn’t just makes them a better bet to win this game.

Rafa Benitez has said that Frank Lampard will feature at Villa Park so it’s not like he has a lack of quality to choose from as he plans to freshen things up. Benitez confirmed that Eden Hazard should be okay despite limping off at Stamford Bridge and similar applies to Victor Moses.

The last time Chelsea played away from home was at Old Trafford and they pulled off a fantastic 1-0 victory. That was their ninth away win in the league this term and they are now unbeaten on their travels since the 2-1 defeat at Southampton at the end of March.

Aston Villa have ran into form at exactly the right time and five wins from their last eight have propelled them to 13th in the table. They have hit that magical 40 point mark and while they aren’t mathematically safe, it’s hard to see Wigan getting the victory they need at the Emirates.

Christian Benteke has been in superb form – 18 goals in his debut season, including a hat trick against Sunderland – but he hasn’t netted against a side in the top five yet and Chelsea have one of the best defences in the league.

I still have my concerns about the Villa defence as well – no clean sheet in 2013 – and they are vulnerable from set plays. John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill all get their fair share of headed goals and this is an area I can see them exploiting on Saturday.

    Match odds

Chelsea are 1.86 to get a vital away win and while the draw did tempt me at 3.85, memories of the 8-0 at Stamford Bridge came flooding back. Despite Villa still not being quite safe, The Blues certainly need the points more than they do and I think this experienced Chelsea side can do a ‘professional job’ on Paul Lambert’s young guns.

    To Score

The games are running out for Frank Lampard to break Bobby Tambling’s goal-scoring record as he still needs two more with only three matches left before his contract runs out. Lampard is a hugely popular player amongst his team mates so I expect they will be teeing him up at every available opportunity, as well as letting him take most of the free kicks to go with his penalty duties. He was benched for the Spurs game and Rafa has said he will feature so it’s almost a certainty that he’ll start. He can be backed at around the 3.4 mark to score within the 90 minutes and that looks a steal to me.

      Atletico Madrid v Barcelona
Sunday 18:00 (Live on Sky Sports 1)
      Atletico 3.8 Barcelona 2.0 draw 3.8

Barcelona will be crowned champions if they win at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday.

Leo Messi should be fit to start and that’s enough to persuade us to back the Catalans to notch a sixth straight win over Atletico, who contrived to lose 2-1 at home to city rivals Real just a fortnight ago.

Diego Simeone has the Copa del Rey final to think about and might even rest a few first-teamers.

      Malaga v Sevilla
Sunday 20:00 (Live on Sky Sports 1)
      Malaga 2.7 Sevilla 2.86 draw 3.5

Sevilla last won on the road at Deportivo La Coruna in September. Since then, every other team in the top five European leagues has won at least one away game.

But we are now in the twilight zone of the season, a shadowy place where motivation can be as important as form.

Malaga have lost 5/8 – most recently bested 6-2 by Real Madrid on Wednesday – and will probably not now make next season’s Champions League, whatever the result of their appeal.

The squad was stretched by a run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League that the players must now be feeling in their legs. For Manuel Pellegrini’s men, the rest of the season is not much more than a warm-down.

Away draws with Betis and Valladolid have shown Sevilla are not total losers away from home. With Geoffrey Kondogbia and Gary Medel back in central midfield, Unai Emery’s side have a chance to break new ground.

      Genoa v Inter

I wouldn’t normally recommend a team involved in a relegation struggle against one of Italy’s giants at odds on, but Genoa look like value at home against Inter at around 1.85. Inter’s shortcomings have been plain to see in recent weeks, and they’ve now lost 7 of their last 10 games as they fade towards a mid table finish. Antonio Cassano may be fit enough to return to the Inter bench, but suspensions for both Juan Jesus and Alvaro Pereira seriously weaken Inter’s already injury hit squad. Davide Ballardini has turned around Genoa’s fortunes, and their fully fit squad and desperation for a win means that they should be a bit shorter to beat abject Inter. Inter have already lost a record number of games this Serie A season, expect them to add one more defeat to the tally this weekend.

      Recommended Bet

Back Genoa to beat Inter @ 1.85
      ********************************

      Milan v Roma

Sunday night’s big game has had the edge taken off it somewhat by Roma’s shock midweek defeat by Chievo. Roma were on the charge, and there was real confidence that they could still make a run at 4th place, but the wind has been knocked out of their sails now, and for all Aurelio Andreazzoli’s public statements, they must know that their race is run. Milan need three points from their last two games to be absolutely sure of a Champions League qualifying round place, and I think that they’re a little short to beat Roma. Andreazzoli’s team were a little unfortunate against Chievo, and their win the previous week in Florence showed the quality that they possess. Roma have a team which is packed with big game players, and they’re good enough to at least pick up a draw in Milan, especially with the psychological benefits of the thrashing they dished out to the Rossoneri before Christmas. Roma should still be motivated enough to want something from this game, and so the lay of Milan at a stupidly short 1.72 is the play.

      Recommended Bet

Lay Milan against Roma @ 1.72

Kolkata Knight Riders v Royal Challengers Bangalore
      Sunday 9 May 2013 at 11:30 BST
      Live on ITV4 and itv.com

      Kolkata Knight Riders
It had all started so positively for KKR when Brett Lee removed Unmunkt Chand’s off stump with the very first ball of IPL 6 to precipitate a comfortable victory over Delhi on the opening day. Since then however, it’s been a difficult tournament for the defending champions and after eight defeats in 13 games, a further loss here will cement their elimination at the end of the group stage.

Kolkata have clearly missed Brendon McCullum who sat out the majority of the tournament with a hamstring injury before leaving the IPL to join up with New Zealand but perhaps the performances of Sunil Narine have been the main issue. The West Indian may still be in the running for the Purple Cap but the majority of his wickets have been tail enders and the suggestion is that the better batsmen have finally worked him out.

There has, however been a late rally in the KKR camp and Limited Overs specialist Ryan Ten Doeschate should really have featured much earlier but while current form is good, the Knight Riders will struggle for points in this match.

      Royal Challengers Bangalore
Virat Kohli is trying desperately to prove that RCB aren’t a one man team and the skipper’s stunning 99 against Delhi took him to third place in the list of leading run scorers in IPL 6. Chris Gayle is second on that list but when these two men have failed, there has been little support from the remaining batsmen.

In the bowling department, Vinay Kumar has been a stand out performer but once again, he’s largely battled alone and needs better back up in tight games.

This ‘three man team’ may be found out in the latter stages of this tournament but for now, Royal Challengers should be strong enough to take the win on Sunday.

      Venue and Conditions
This is the first game to be played at the Ranchi’s JSCA Stadium in this tournament making it hard to judge exactly what a par score should be. When England played an ODI here in January, the tourists limped to 155 all out in 42 overs and while India chased that target down with 20 overs to spare, recent results suggest that this isn’t the fastest ground in the country.

A total of 160 should be the minimum target for the side taking first knock in a game where sufficient cloud cover is expected to assist the seamers.

      Match Odds
Bangalore’s more consistent form over the course of the tournament sees them as favourites at 1.7 with Kolkata the outside bet at 2.2.

KKR definitely have momentum and look a far better T20 unit with Ten Doeschate and Eoin Morgan in the middle order but I expect a significant innings from either Gayle or Kohli to seal the points for the Royal Challengers.

      Top Kolkata Batsman
After making just 12 runs from three knocks, Gambhir returned to from with a half century on Friday and the skipper remains favourite at 3.4. Elsewhere, Ten Doeschate looks at little short at 6 but in contrast, the inconsistent Yusuf Pathan is generous at 7 and is my tip to finally make a telling score for Kolkata.

      Top Bangalore Batsman
Kohli’s knock of 99 will see him attract a fair share of the market at 4 while the patient Cheteshwar Pujara has the capacity to bat through the innings and is in with a chance at 5.

I’ve avoided the favourite so far in this tournament as he’s generally far too short but another Gaylestorm is overdue so take Chris Gayle at 2.52.

      Recommended Bet
Back Bangalore to win at 1.7.

The Poule d’Essai des Pouliches Guineas takes place at Longchamp on Sunday……………………………………………………………………

A maximum field of twenty lines up for the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, the emphasis more on quantity than quality in an open-looking renewal. The four British-trained runners all have a bit to find with the best of the French fillies but Zurigha looks the pick of that quartet judged on her impressive win in a minor event at Kempton last time. Zurigha had Cocktail Queen (David Elsworth) back in fourth, though the draw hasn’t been kind to the Richard Hannon filly. The other pair from Britain will need to improve on defeats in Guineas trials at home, Melbourne Memories (Clive Cox) finishing a good third in the Fred Darling and Waterway Run (Ralph Beckett) a below-form fifth in the Nell Gwyn.

Mikel Delzangles will be seeking to put a disappointing run from What A Name in the 1000 Guineas behind him with Flotilla his main hope in the French equivalent. A reproduction of her Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf win at Santa Anita in the autumn (with Waterway Run and subsequent Guineas winner Sky Lantern down the field) would be good enough here, though she does have an absence since then to overcome against race-fit rivals.

Flotilla didn’t get the best of runs when fourth in the Prix Marcel Boussac prior to the Breeders’ Cup, but has prospects of turning the tables on the placed horses from the top French contest for two-year-old fillies, Topaze Blanche and Alterite. The latter easily won a listed race at Saint-Cloud on her reappearance, while Topaze Blanche shaped nicely under a considerate ride on her return when a close third in the Prix de la Grotte at Longchamp, giving the impression she’d be capable of being more of a threat another day to both Kenhope and Tasaday who take her on again here.

Trained by Andre Fabre for Godolphin, Tasaday lost her unbeaten record in the Grotte after a two-year-old campaign that ended with a beating of Cocktail Queen and Meri Shika in the Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville.

The Marcel Boussac winner Silasol, absent here, was beaten on her reappearance in the Prix Vanteaux by Esoterique who has now won both her starts this spring. Esoterique has been supplemented for this by Andre Fabre and is one of the few in the line-up on an upward curve, her draw looking a bonus too. She went with zest in the nine-furlong Vanteaux, and the drop back in trip is unlikely to inconvenience her.

Ex-Irish filly Spinacre ran well on her debut for Pascal Bary when a close third behind What A Name in the Prix Imprudence and will be as effective back at a mile, but she’s another who will have to overcome a wide draw in this big field. Morning Frost and Baie d’Honneur line up in good form after winning listed races last time out at Chantilly and Toulouse respectively but both will need to show a fair bit more improvement to be involved here.

      Recommendation:
Back Esoterique in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches
