MUJASSAM (9.15) is well worth waiting for in the finale at Ayr this evening. He struck form with a vengeance at this time last year, racking up three quick victories in Scotland on fast tracks, and bounced back to form at Catterick on Monday when catching favourite Tricky Dicky. This step up to seven furlongs isn’t a problem as he posted a Chelmsford City success over a mile last November. Aliento foiled a big gamble on Supaulette at Thirsk on her first start for Michael Dods.
ANYTHINGTODAY (7.40) would have been a big bet if the track hadn’t dried out but he is still worthy of an interest. At Ripon last time, David Nolan seemed to have made a race-winning move when switching Anythingtoday for a clear run two out. He appeared home and dry for a brief moment at the furlong marker before being scythed down by Speed Company’s burst of acceleration.
Anythingtoday had finished a fine fourth to stablemate Fayez on his previous start and remains quite well handicapped on old form. David O’Meara’s gelding goes well with some cut underfoot so drying ground has to be of some concern, but he should outclass this field.
The one fly in the ointment is lurking at the foot of the weights, with Mark Johnston’s three-year-old Asian Angel making an excellent return to action when runner-up at Leicester.
JACKHAMMER (5.55), a dual Carlisle winner on a yielding surface, is taken to complete a quick hat-trick for Dianne Sayer. Jackhammer won here over a mile on fast ground in May, so will handle conditions. He powered home over nine furlongs at Carlisle and this longer trip should pose no problem.
ALRIGHT SUNSHINE (6.30) has to concede weight to a couple of fairly useful three-year-olds but still appears the most likely winner of the 1m 1f novice stakes. Keith Dalgleish’s four-year-old ran a cracker at Ripon 16 days ago, finishing on the heels of Ralph Beckett’s Future Investment and Godolphin’s Dubai Tradition. That was over 1m 3f and Alright Sunshine had earlier landed the odds at Musselburgh over 1m 4f, but his trainer must believe Alright Sunshine has the speed to cope with this significant drop in distance.
Richard Fahey’s Noble Prospector was sent off 6-4 favourite at Beverley but couldn’t live with the William Haggas-trained Kodiac Pride, eventually finishing third. That sets a fair standard and he is the one to beat.
Simon Crisford, fresh from a Royal Ascot success yesterday, saddles an intriguing runner in Match Maker, off the track for two years since finishing down the field in the Chesham Stakes at the royal meeting. He has come a long way to make his comeback and a market check is advised.
THE RESDEV WAY (7.05) must have a slick surface to show his best and he got that at Yarmouth when coming through late to score. Tomorrow’s Angel ran well at Musselburgh in early May and won’t be far away.
TOMMY G (8.10) fairly stormed down the outside to win over course and distance at the end of May and Jim Goldie’s gelding has plenty of solid Ayr form to back it up. Tommy G is 3lb higher tonight and 7lb apprentice Corey Madden is replaced by Ali Rawlinson, but confirmed front-runner Lamloom should set the race up for a closer.
The in-form Sayer yard strip Monday’s Carlisle scorer Redarna for action as he bids to rattle off a hat-trick. A 5lb rise is fine.
It was fabulous Frankie's day in the sun at Royal Ascot yesterday and Ryan Moore could easily mop up today on Japan, Ten Sovereigns and Hermosa. They are all skinny prices but are difficult to oppose if turning up with their A-Game.
The Sandringham Stakes, a mile handicap for three-year-old fillies over the straight course, isn’t for the faint-hearted but INVITATIONAL (5.00) should give her backers a good spin. Roger Varian sent her to Wolverhampton in April to land a novice stakes and the form has been made to look decent by runner-up Astrologer. Invitational was conceding 7lb and readily pulled almost three lengths clear at the line.
John Gosden’s Nonchalance landed some hefty bets when powering home at Haydock and just about holds stable companion Whimbrel on that run, despite a 7lb difference in the weights.
Varian has another leading chance with FUJAIRA PRINCE (5.35) in the 1m 4f Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes. The five-year-old won a novice stakes at Wetherby on good to soft before being stepped up in class at York. Fujaira Prince led two out before being caught close home by First Eleven, with re-opposing Corgi and Collide back in third and fourth.
