One of those nations, Curacao, made its debut in Group E against four-time champions Germany, while the ambitious Ecuador took on Ivory Coast.

Find out what MrFixitsTips has to say about Group E of the 2026 World Cup, including predictions, tactics, and odds.

Which teams are in Group E of the 2026 World Cup?

Germany

Current FIFA ranking: 10

The generational shift in the German national team has led to consecutive group-stage eliminations in the last two World Cups, so Die Mannschaft arrived at this tournament with a point to prove.

There is no doubt that the young stars on the team, such as Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, have what it takes to be champions, but in the qualifiers, there were signs that they were not immune to costly mistakes.

Germany could hardly have made a more emphatic start to their World Cup campaign, thrashing Curacao 7-1 in their opening match before backing it up with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast on matchday two.

After falling behind to Franck Kessie, Julian Nagelsmann's side turned the game around through a late Deniz Undav brace, securing qualification for the knockout stages and guaranteeing top spot in Group E with a game to spare.

With six points from six and nine goals scored already, Germany have firmly established themselves as one of the tournament's strongest teams, though they suffered a setback when Nico Schlotterbeck was ruled out for the remainder of the competition through injury.

Manager and tactics

Julian Nagelsmann is known for his deeply analytical approach, which can be both helpful and a hindrance to his players’ ability to perform at their best.

Germany rely on dominating possession and maintaining complete control over the action on the field, preferring to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The problem facing Die Mannschaft as they proceed in this competition, will be a lack of depth in the squad.

Curacao

Current FIFA ranking: 82

Curacao made a historic World Cup debut as the smallest country ever to compete in the tournament. Benefiting from the absence of the host nations during the qualifying cycle, Curacao remained undefeated in their 10 qualifying matches (W7, D3).

Their World Cup debut proved to be a harsh introduction to football's biggest stage as they suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat against Germany.

However, Dick Advocaat's side responded admirably on matchday two, producing one of the stories of the tournament so far by holding Ecuador to a goalless draw and securing the nation's first-ever World Cup point. Goalkeeper Eloy Room was the hero as Curacao withstood sustained Ecuadorian pressure to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Curacao now head into their final match against Ivory Coast knowing that victory could yet give them an outside chance of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.

Manager and tactics

Dick Advocaat, who will go down in history as the oldest manager in World Cup history (78), has a wealth of experience, including reaching the quarterfinals with the Netherlands in 1994.

Naturally, Curacao draw on the Dutch style of play; during the qualifiers, we saw a solid defence, attacks built on numerous passes, and quick counterattacks down the flanks. Their preferred formation is 4-3-3.

Ivory Coast

Current FIFA ranking: 34

Stepping onto the biggest stage for the fourth time since their debut in 2006 and for the first time since the 2014 World Cup, Ivory Coast arrived determined to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

The Elephants took a huge step towards that objective by defeating Ecuador 1-0 in their opening fixture, a result that underlined why many viewed them as dark horses entering the tournament.

However, they were unable to build on that success on matchday two, suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Germany after leading for much of the contest through Franck Kessie's opener. Two late goals from Deniz Undav denied Emerse Fae's side what would have been a famous result.

Despite the setback, Ivory Coast remain well placed with three points from two games and know that victory against Curacao in their final fixture would almost certainly secure a place in the knockout rounds.

Manager and tactics

Emerse Fae has revolutionized the Ivory Coast team since he arrived in 2024, with the team playing sensational defensive football and not conceding a single goal in their 10 qualifying matches (25:0).

The team is at its best when it has limited possession, relying on quick counterattacks down the wings and plenty of crosses in the box. In the qualifiers, we saw them primarily play a 4-3-3 system, but also transition to a 4-2-3-1 when necessary.

Ecuador

Current FIFA ranking: 23

Ecuador enjoyed a historic qualifying campaign, finishing second behind Argentina and ahead of traditional South American powers such as Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay. While their attack occasionally lacks cutting edge, their defensive structure has consistently been among the strongest in South America.

However, their World Cup campaign has not gone according to plan – a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast on matchday one was followed by a frustrating goalless draw against Curacao despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances.

The South Americans threw everything at Curacao's goal but were unable to find a breakthrough, leaving them with just one point from their opening two matches.

As a result, Sebastian Beccacece's side head into their final group game against Germany knowing that only a victory is likely to guarantee progression, while a draw could leave them relying on results elsewhere.

Manager and tactics

Sebastian Beccacece has extensive experience as an assistant manager for Chile and Argentina during the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, and is one of the few managers who has never been a professional football player.

Under his leadership, Ecuador have become a team that is nearly impossible to beat, relying on strict defensive football. The team plays best when it sits back and does not seek to control the ball. In the qualifiers, we mainly saw 4-4-2 and 4-4-1-1 formations, but they are fully capable of adapting to their opponent and switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation with equal success.

2026 World Cup Group E fixtures and odds

Matchday 1

Germany were overwhelming favourites with an implied probability of around 95%, and they completely justified that assessment by thrashing Curacao 7-1. The scoreline was emphatic, but the result itself was exactly what the market expected, with the only surprise being the scale of Germany's dominance rather than the outcome.

Ecuador entered the match as narrow favourites, while Ivory Coast were considered outsiders, making the odds slightly inaccurate. The Ivorians edged a tight contest 1-0 to claim all three points, though, given how close the prices were, this was not a major upset, but it was still a result that went against the bookmakers' expectations.

Matchday 2

Germany (11/20) were clear favourites, though not overwhelmingly so, and they justified that status with a hard-fought victory. Ivory Coast (19/4) made the Germans work for the three points, but the bookmakers correctly identified Germany as the more likely winner.

Ecuador (9/100) were one of the biggest favourites of the entire group stage, carrying an implied probability of over 90%, while Curacao (20/1) were given almost no chance of avoiding defeat. Instead, Curacao produced one of the shocks of matchday two by holding Ecuador to a goalless draw (10/1) and keeping their qualification hopes alive.

Matchday 3

Curacao vs Ivory Coast

  • Curacao (12/1)
  • Draw (11/2)
  • Ivory Coast (1/2)

Ecuador vs Germany

  • Ecuador (4/1)
  • Draw (13/5)
  • Germany (7/10)

Few people would have bet against Germany winning Group E, moreso after their emphatic win against Curacao, and they are now certain to top the group.

However, there is still a huge opportunity for the three other teams to finish as runners up in the group.
