While many punters naturally gravitate towards backing a winner, betting on a draw can be a smart and rewarding alternative.

This is because bookmakers typically assign bigger odds to stalemates, which occur less often than victories for either team.

With that in mind, let’s examine this weekend’s fixtures and identify the games where draw outcomes present the best value.

Hull vs Middlesbrough (Saturday, 15:30)

Playoff finals are notoriously tight, low-scoring affairs, and that could well be the case when Hull and Middlesbrough meet in Saturday’s English Championship Playoff final at Wembley. That makes the 90-minute draw an appealing angle of attack.

Moreover, four of Hull’s final seven league matches of the regular season ended all square, as did the first leg of their playoff semi-final tie with Millwall.

As for Middlesbrough, their push for automatic promotion unravelled largely due to a string of late-season stalemates, with seven of their final 14 league outings finishing level, while they were also held in the first leg of their playoff semi-final with Southampton.

With the Saints’ expulsion disrupting the build-up, both sides may be less than ideally prepared for this promotion shootout, which only strengthens the case for extra time.

Nottingham Forest vs Bournemouth (Sunday, 16:00)

The draw looks like a strong runner when Nottingham Forest host Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. The City Ground has become something of a stalemate hotspot in recent times, with the latest of those coming in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle a fortnight ago. That means six of Forest’s last eight top-flight home games have ended honours even.

While Bournemouth arrive with greater incentive in the race for European qualification, a point would be enough to rubber-stamp a top-six finish. It is also worth noting that the Cherries have drawn a league-high 17 of their 37 Premier League matches this season, including nine during their current 17-game unbeaten streak.

St Mirren vs Partick Thistle (Monday, 20:00)

St Mirren and Partick Thistle’s Scottish Premiership playoff tie is finely poised heading into Monday night’s second leg. The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Firhill on Thursday, and another stalemate here would come as little surprise. Partick are now 14 matches unbeaten, with eight of those encounters ending level after 90 minutes.

The fact St Mirren closed out the regular season with a 1-1 draw at home to Dundee United only adds to the appeal of this high-stakes second leg potentially going the distance in Paisley.
