IT'S already been a monumental season in Italy, with Napoli clinching their first Scudetto in 31 years, Juventus and Roma chasing glory in the Europa League, Fiorentina flying the flag in Europa Conference League and in Milan tonight a mammoth clash between San Siro residents AC and Inter for a place in the Champions League final.
The match is repeat of the 2003 competition when AC Milan qualified by virtue of the ‘away' goals rule after a 0-0 draw when they were at home and a 1-1 draw when the nominal away side. It also brings back memories of an infamous quarter-final meeting which was abandoned in the 73rd minute of the second leg after smoke from flares engulfed the San Siro pitch. Milan were 3-0 up at the time and eventually awarded the tie.
20 years later and it's rivals Inter who are favourites to qualify at 4/7 with AC at 5/4.
I Nerazzurri come in to the game in the slightly better form, with five wins on the bounce and scoring goals for fun. Simone Inzaghi's men have struck an impressive 20 goals in their last six outings.
AC Milan have been less convincing. Although they're unbeaten in nine (W4 D5) they've had to rely on added time goals to earns draws against Cremonese and Roma recently.
The sides have met nine times since the start of 2021 and its Inter who have had the upper hand, winning five and drawing two. A Lautaro Martínez goal was enough to decide the most recent Derby della Madonnina and the 21-goal hitman is 11/5 to break the deadlock tonight.
But instinctively it feels like this could be a slow-burner. 180 minutes of two Italian teams playing for a place in the biggest final of them all? It might not be the most open of ties. A repeat 0-0 of 2003 pays 13/2 – always back no goalscorer though, at the same price, in case the match is decided by an own goal.
Best bet could be a low-scoring first half. No goals in the first 45 minutes pays 6/4. Alternatively a draw gives you a little bit more cover at 1/1. A favourite bet is the No Goal Before market at Bet365 where the line is set at 34:00 at 5/6.

It’s seems like we’ve gone back to the 70’s lately with all the strikes and everything but tonight we have a game of football featuring an 80’s style AC Milan, a side who grind out those 1:0 wins.
If it wasn’t for the fact that away goals ain’t a thing anymore, then there would be a high chance of their game plan being based on keep a clean sheet at home: get a score draw away.
Just looked at the stats for the 2002 game which they probably approached in this way finished 0:0 at home and 1:1 away. Corners were 9:5, SOT’s were 5:4
I think tonight’s game has under 1.5 written all over it. Probably 0:0 half time. Perhaps 1:0 to AC Milan full time. Probably plenty of SOT’s from Inter but more from distance.
For a more goal heavy bet this evening, I’m looking to Chelsea ladies against whipping girls Leicester.
Lower risk Bet builder. Odds 2.25
Over 0.5 1st half Chelsea goals
Over 1.5 1st half match goals
Over 3.5 Chelsea Team goals
Higher Risk Bet Builder odds 6.0
Over 2.5 first half Chelsea goals
Over 1.5 second half Chelsea goals
Good luck. Let’s hope the game’s better than expected. Might put a bit of wet paint on one of my walls so I’ve got something more exciting to watch (if it isn’t).
