The first match we’ve picked is an interesting matchup between Frances Tiafoe and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. We’re aiming for the upset here, as the French player is on home ground and has been on a great run recently.
In the other match, we’re backing Jordan Thompson to upset Casper Ruud, who hasn’t played particularly well lately and has had some issues against Thompson in the past. It makes a lot of sense to support the Aussie.
Mpetshi Perricard to defeat Tiafoe @ 7/5
Mpetshi Perricard just won the Basel event and nearly broke into the top 30. He’s playing the best tennis of his career, and more generally, he’s just a menace to face indoors.
He’s exceptionally tall, has a powerful serve capable of delivering around 20 aces per match, and plays effectively behind it.
Although he’s not the most mobile player, he has a strong forehand that he strikes across the net with relative ease. His opponent, Tiafoe, is not the most serious competitor at times and can lose matches if he doesn’t stay focused.
This matchup simply reads like one where Tiafoe may push himself to a tiebreak or two, but then lose focus in the critical moments. Facing a solid server like Mpetshi Perricard will likely give Tiafoe enough time to get distracted since he won’t have many return opportunities.
That being said, there’s a chance Tiafoe finds motivation and delivers a signature performance, but that’s always a gamble.
We believe the French player will relish playing at home in front of friends and family, and with the confidence he gained recently, he should be able to get it done.
Thompson to defeat Ruud @ 1/1
Now, this pick mostly comes down to the matchup, which has proven to be quite tricky for Ruud. Thompson is a very solid player, and more importantly, he shows up against some of the best players.
He might lose against lower-ranked players, but when it matters, he delivers his best tennis. His best level is well-suited to indoor courts because he has a versatile skill set. Approaching the net is common for him, and his serve is quite solid as well.
He’s also been fairly consistent this year. Ruud, on the other hand, has been a bit all over the place and generally hasn’t reached his peak form. His recent form has been shaky, and he’s never been at his best indoors.
Trailing 3-4 against Thompson in the head-to-head is just the icing on the cake. Ruud has never beaten Thompson on hard courts and has lost their last two matches comfortably, including a recent one in Tokyo.
