Baez got a bye into the second round; Coric earned his place with a straight-sets win over Nagal. While Baez would not count the hard court his best surface, we expect the Argentine to thrive at the venue that gave him his first hard-court title last year.
Coric has not had the best of runs in 2024. From a best ever No. 12 ATP ranking in 2022, the Croatian has fallen to No. 87, largely due to his 15 losses against only 10 wins this year. That said, after his facile first-round demolition of Nagal, we expect Coric to give Baez a torrid time.
Though Baez has won both of his past matches against Coric, the defending champion’s poor hard-court record (5 wins vs 6 losses) in 2024 is a cause for worry. The quality of Coric’s serve – a highlight of his round one showing — could hold the key in a closely-fought match.
Eubanks to beat Gaston 2-0 @ 3/2
Like Baez, Frenchman Hugo Gaston has a bye into round two. The 14th seed will clash in a tough match against Christopher Eubanks. Ranked No. 61, Gaston has had a reasonably good run on clay this season. However, his hard court showing has been disappointing, the latest disaster coming in his qualifier-round loss in Cincinnati.
Ahead of the match, Eubanks will relish his 1-0 head-to-head record against Gaston, though that win came on grass. Before this tournament, Eubanks reached the Cary Challenge Tour quarter-final, losing to eventual champion Safiullin.
The 120th-ranked American underscored his grass court credentials with a come-from-behind win over Adam Walton in round one, but we’re backing him to get this one done in straight sets on Tuesday.
