Werder Bremen vs Bayer Leverkusen

, KO: 14:30 , Weser Stadium
Bayer Leverkusen

Erik Ten Hag's Bundesliga debut didn't go to plan last weekend so the Bayer Leverkusen boss will be looking for response when his side take on Werder Bremen on matchday two.

The bookies had Leverkusen as 1/2 hot favourites for their opener at home to Hoffenheim but it turned into a day to forget for Ten Hag as his side crashed to a 2-1 defeat, busting my coupon.

The former Manchester United boss had a tough task following in the footsteps of title-winning predecessor Xabi Alonso and the loss of some key players hasn't helped his cause.

Liverpool snapped up star duo Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, with winger Amine Adli joining the exodus to England last week as he signed for Bournemouth. Arsenal now look set to snap up Piero Hincapie so Ten Hag will probably be looking to strengthen before the transfer window closes.

Werder Bremen have made an even worse start to the season than Leverkusen, with a DFB Pokal exit to second-tier Arminia followed by a 4-1 thrashing in Frankfurt for their Budesliga opener.

They also have a new manager, with Horst Steffen replacing long-serving Ole Werner in the summer after coming within a whisker of leading Elversberg to three promotions.

Stepping up to the top flight has proved problematic so far but a win over Leverkusen would help win over some of the doubters.

How the bookies view it: Bayer to bounce back

Werder Bremen are 13/5 outsiders with BoyleSports after their terrible start to the season. Bayer Leverkusen are evens to hit back after last week's disappointment while the draw pays 13/5.

Players to watch: Stick with Schick

Patrik Schick let me down last weekend by drawing a blank but the powerful Czech striker will be a handful for Werder's leaky defence. He's 11/10 at Bet365 for anytime scorer here.

Marco Grull has started up front for Werder Bremen in their first two games and should get the nod again here. He's 11/4 at Bet365 to open his account for the new campaign.

Probable line-ups

Hincapie may sit this one out for Leverkusen amid the transfer rumours while Malik Tillman, Loic Balde, Martin Terrier, Exequiel Palacios, Jonas Hofmann and Jeanuel Belocian are injured.

Werder also have a long casualty list, with Amos Pieper, Oliver Deman, Max Wober, Jens Stage and Mitchell Weiser set to miss out.

Werder Bremen: Backhaus, Stark, Balatini, Agu, Friedl, Covic, Bittencourt, Njinmah, Lynen, Schmid, Grull.

Bayer Leverkusen: Flekken, Tape, Quansah, Tapsoba, Andrich, Poku, Grimaldo, Garcia, Schick, Tella, Maza.

Anything else catch the eye?

Werder's camp isn't a happy one and after losing in the cup to Arminia, skipper Marco Friedl said: “Now we’re in deeper s***” than after the pre-season.”

Leverkusen are still getting used to Ten Hag's ways but look decent value at evens against opponents in disarray. Adding on over 1.5 goals boosts their price to 5/4.

Both sides looked weak in defence last weekend so we should see goals in this one. Combining BTTS with over 2.5 strikes pays just 3/4 at BoyleSports but over 1.5 first-half goals is better at 5/4.

We saw 10 corners in Leverkusen's opener last week so there could be some value in backing over four first-half corners here at 21/20 with Bet365.
