Switzerland Women vs Iceland Women

, KO: 20:00 , Stadion Wankdorf
Iceland Women

Both Switzerland and Iceland lost their opening game of the UEFA Women's European Championships, and know that another defeat will likely result in an early exit from the tournament.

This would be especially detrimental to the hosts, who will be desperate to advance into the knockout stage. However, they are the second-lowest ranked team in Group A according to the official FIFA World Rankings (23rd), so perhaps they are just playing for pride.

Both the Swiss and Iceland are not in the best of form, as both teams have only won once in their last seven matches in total in all competitions. They have also both failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous five, which suggests that we could see plenty of goalmouth action when they collide on Sunday night.

In terms of H2Hs, Switzerland have won four of the last five, so should still feel confident that they can grab the win that they need against a team higher ranked than them in the world rankings in Iceland (14th). Nonetheless, this could be a tough one to call in terms of picking a winner.

How the bookies view it: Switzerland strong favourites

Switzerland have been installed as 20/21 odds-on favourites with BoyleSports to claim all three points. A draw is valued at 9/4 with the same bookmaker, while Iceland are 13/5 outsiders.

Given that the Swiss have been on top in recent meetings, but Iceland are higher in the world rankings, both will feel confident of getting the vital victory needed. Thus, we can see a draw panning out, which we feel represents decent value.

Recent head-to-head: Iceland emerge victorious

Despite Switzerland winning four of the previous five H2Hs, it was Iceland that actually emerged victorious. They ran out 2-1 winners in 2023, with Giodis Perla Viggosdottir and Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir getting on the scoresheet to trump Seraina Piubel's goal for the Swiss.

Players to watch: Can Swiss rely on Ries again?

Nadine Riesen scored for Switzerland despite defeat against Norway last time out, and the Frankfurt defender is a real threat in both boxes. 5/1 from BoyleSports seems a very tempting price for her to find the back of the net again.

Dagny Brynjarsdottir is likely to replace the suspended Hildur Antonsdottir in midfield, after coming on as a substitute when she got sent off against Finland last time out.

Predicted lineups

Switzerland have no fresh concerns in their squad to worry about, so could field a similar starting XI to the one against Norway.

Antondsottir is now suspended for Iceland after her red card against Finland.

Switzerland Women: Herzog; Calligaris, Stierli, Maritz; Riesen, Mauron, Sow, Walti, Buhler; Reuteler, Crnogorcevic.

Iceland Women: Runarsdottir; Arnadottir, Viggosdottir, Sigurdardottir, Arnardottir; Eiriksdottir, Brynjarsdottir, Johannsdottir, Jonsdottir; Vilhjalmsdottir, Jessen.

Anything else catch the eye?

Given that both teams have been leaking goals of late and with what is at stake, the Total Goals market looks appealing. Over 3.5 can be backed at 5/2 with BoyleSports, which we feel is a wise punt.
