St Mirren vs Rangers

, KO: 12:00 Oct 8, 2023, SMiSA Stadium
Rangers

RANGERS travel the short distance to Paisley to face the Premiership shock troops this season with interim manager Steven Davis ready to take charge of his first league match.

The managerless Ibrox side were in midweek action in the Europa League group stages and they seem to be in disarray after yet another timid display where they lost 2-1 to Aris Limassol in Cyprus.

They have been wildly inconsistent in the league where last week's home defeat to Aberdeen was their third in just seven league games this season.

Davis and whoever gets the job will inherit a bloated squad that looks imbalanced and full of players not good enough for Rangers.

And they will be in for a test in Paisley against a Saints side who have started the season on fire and are currently three points ahead of Rangers in the league.

Stephen Robinson's side will happily give up possession to Rangers, but they are well organised and rapid when it comes to counter-attacking.

They remain unbeaten in the league and should arguably have more points having thrown away two of them after outplaying Aberdeen in a 2-2 draw in Paisley and drawing at Livingston and Kilmarnock.

And they will be relishing trying to put one over Rangers on Sunday.

How the bookies view it

It's a sign of how these teams have done this season that Rangers are almost backable at 4/9 with bet365 when they are usually shorter.

St Mirren can be backed at 13/2 with Coral and the draw is 15/4 with Paddy Power.

Recent head to heads

Last season St Mirren held Rangers to a 1-1 draw in Paisley which cost Giovanni van Bronckhorst his job. They also lost 3-0 in the other game as well as twice at Ibrox.

The Saints' last win in Paisley against Rangers in the league came 12 years ago although they did beat Steven Gerrard's Rangers in the League Cup a few years ago.

Players to watch

Scott Tanser is an underrated performer for St Mirren and has actually scored two goals in his last four games at Hibs and Motherwell. He is 16/1 to score again with bet365.

Rangers captain James Tavernier has come under fire from his own fans recently with a series of insipid displays. But he's always good for a goal either via the penalty spot or from set pieces and he is 23/10 to score here with William Hill.

Anything else catch the eye?

Rangers just can't be trusted to win anywhere just now and there is a toxic cloud swirling around Ibrox.
Morale seems to be very low indeed and the hosts will be up for this having had a week to prepare, with Rangers losing in Cyprus. Back Saints on the double chance market to win or draw at 13/8 with UniBet.

St Mirren are strong at the back and it could be a tight affair. Take the 13/10 on under 2.5 goals with UniBet,

It could be a tight affair and BetVictor's both teams to score: No at 21/20 is worth backing here too.
