Chelsea are looking to snap out of a mini slump as they travel to Southampton for a Premier League fixture on Saturday. The Saints appear to be doing even worse at the moment and are likely to struggle against Chelsea, who have impressed on their recent travels.
Southampton appear to have lost their way lately and are currently winless in their last five matches across all competitions. They have suffered four defeats in that run and have slipped into the bottom half of the table.
The Saints were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United in their previous EPL fixture. They fought back from a goal down with James Ward-Prowse’s second half free-kick ensuring they claimed a share of the spoils.
One thing that must be worrying for manager Ralph Hassenhuttl is Southampton’s poor home form. They have lost their last three matches across all competitions at St Mary’s and were beaten 2-1 by struggling Watford in their previous Premier League home fixture.
Chelsea are going through a rough time and were beaten 4-1 at home by Brentford in their previous Premier League fixture. They struck first through Antonio Rudiger but an uncharacteristic defensive capitulation saw them concede four times in the second half.
The Blues followed up that result with another home defeat, this time a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday. They were let down by some poor defending and once again struggled to find their rhythm at the back.
The good news for manager Thomas Tuchel is that both matches have been at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have done some of their best work on their travels in recent week and have won their last seven away matches across all competitions.
How the bookies view it
Despite their recent struggles, Chelsea still have the upper hand among the bookies with a win priced at 8/9 by SBK. Southampton are considered outsiders at home at 33/10 with Sport Nation while a draw is set at odds of 14/5 with Unibet.
Recent head to head
Chelsea have the upper hand in this fixture and are unbeaten in their last four matches against Southampton. They knocked the Saints out of the EFL Cup on penalties this season and claimed a 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture in the Premier League.
Players to watch
Given Chelsea's recent defensive frailties, Southampton will fancy their chances of causing them plenty of trouble. Che Adams has scored in two of the last four matches against the Blues and is priced at 3/1 by Unibet to find the net on Saturday.
Kai Havertz has been in fine form for Chelsea, scoring four goals in his last four Premier League matches. The attacker was also on target in the last meeting with Southampton and is priced at 39/20 by Unibet to maintain his recent scoring form.
Anything else catch the eye?
The reverse fixture produced over 3.5 goals and with both teams struggling at the back, a similar outcome could be on the cards at 23/10 with BetVictor. Over 2.5 goals can also be considered at 15/16 with Sport Nation while both teams could be backed to score at 17/20 with Unibet.
There were more goals after the break in the reverse fixture and with both teams often slow to find their rhythm, the second half could be tipped as the highest scoring half at 11/10 with Paddy Power.
