After crashing out of the FA Cup, Sheffield United return to Championship action as they host West Brom on Wednesday. Bramall Lane has been a fortress for Sheffield this season and they are expected to have the upper hand over the Baggies, who have been erratic lately.
Sheffield United were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday after a 3-0 semi-final defeat to Manchester City. They were no match for the reigning Premier League champions and could only muster a single attempt on target throughout the encounter.
Getting past Manchester City was always going to be a difficult task and Sheffield United will be keen to move on from that and focus on confirming automatic promotion. Paul Heckingbottom’s men look well placed to claim the second automatic slot as they hold a seven-point gap over third placed Luton Town with a game in hand.
Sheffield United head into Thursday’s clash with five wins from their last six Championship matches. They have also won their last three matches at Bramall Lane and claimed a 1-0 victory over Bristol City in their previous fixture.
West Brom are also coming off a defeat as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Sunderland in their previous Championship fixture. They went in front just before the break but failed to build on John Swift’s opener and allowed the visitors back in the contest.
That result is a setback in their promotion playoff push as they missed the chance to climb into the top six. As it stands Carlos Corberan’s men remain ninth on the table, two points off the playoff places.
West Brom will head to Bramall Lane with some confidence having won their last two away matches. However, both games were against teams struggling in the lower side of the table while the results also ended a run of six defeats and a draw from their previous seven fixtures on the road.
How the bookies view it
Sheffield United are considered favourites among the bookies with a home win priced 23/20 with Unibet. A victory for West Brom is valued at 14/5 by bet365 while BoyleSports is offering odds of 5/2 for a draw.
Head to head
Sheffield United and West Brom have 34 wins each with 20 draws from 88 previous meetings. However, the Blades claimed a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in October.
Players to watch
Iliman Ndiaye had a quiet outing in the FA Cup semi-final but remains one of the most dangerous attackers for Sheffield United. He has found the net in two of the last three matches at Bramall Lane and is priced at 11/4 with bet365.
West Brom can also hold their own going forward, particularly with Brandon Thomas-Asante, who has seven Championship goals this season. The attacker has also scored in two of his last four matches and is priced at 10/3 by William Hill to find the net on Wednesday.
Anything else catch the eye?
Sheffield United and West Brom have plenty of attacking quality and both teams could be backed to score at 4/5 with Paddy Power. The Baggies have seen over 2.5 goals in three of their last four matches and a repeat is priced at 11/10 with Betfred while over 3.5 goals is valued at 14/5 by Unibet.
Sheffield United have opened the scoring in eight of their last 10 home matches and can be tipped to score first on Wednesday at 3/4 with Coral.
