Seattle Sounders are aiming to hold on to the playoff spot as they host Montreal in a cross-Conference MLS fixture on Thursday. Things have been smooth for the Sounders in recent weeks and this trend looks set to continue against Montreal, who look slightly off colour.
Seattle Sounders are barely holding on to the final playoff spot as they sit seventh in the Western Conference, just two points above Houston Dynamo in eighth. However, they have been in good form lately and are unbeaten in their last four MLS matches, claiming three wins in that run.
The Sounders were in rampant mood in their previous fixture as they eased to a 3-0 victory over Sporting Kansas. They struck early in the contest through Will Bruin while Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan added further goals after the break.
Lumen Field has been a fortress for Seattle Sounders, who often do their best work in front of their fans. Brian Schmetzer’s men are unbeaten in their last five home matches, claiming four wins in that run.
Montreal are also battling for a playoff finish in the Eastern Conference. Wilfried Nancy’s men are currently third, just three points behind leaders Philadelphia Union.
Things have not been particularly smooth for Montreal in recent weeks as they only just ended a run of two defeats with a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma. Romell Quioto opened the scoring in the first half while Mathieu Choiniere netted the winner after the break.
One of the problems for Montreal is that they have struggled on their recent travels, losing their last two away matches. First, they were beaten 2-1 by Nashville before suffering a 4-0 defeat to Eastern Conference strugglers Toronto in the Canadian Championship.
How the bookies view it
Seattle Sounders have the upper hand among the bookies with a home win priced at 19/20 by William Hill. A victory for Montreal is valued at 3/1 by Unibet while a draw is set at odds of 11/4 by bet365.
Head to head
Montreal have a 5-2 advantage with one draw from eight previous matches against Seattle Sounders. They also claimed a 2-1 victory the last time both teams met back in 2019.
Players to watch
With top scorer Raul Ruidiaz currently injured, Seattle Sounders will look to Jordan Morris to provide the spark in attack. The forward was on target last time out for his fourth MLS goal of the season and is priced at 15/8 by bet365 to once again get on the score sheet.
Much of Montreal’s goals this season have come from midfield with Djordje Mihailovic their top scorer with seven goals. He will once again be the one watch for the visitors and is priced at 11/4 by bet365 to find the net on Thursday.
Anything else catch the eye?
Given the attacking quality expected to be on display, there are likely to be goals on Thursday. Both teams were on target after the break in their last meeting and Thursday’s clash could be tipped to follow a similar pattern at 12/5 by bet365. The second half could also be tipped to produce more goals at 11/10 with Paddy Power.
Seattle Sounders have seen over 2.5 goals in four of their last five home matches and a repeat is priced at 6/7 by SBK. Over 3.5 goals could also be considered at 2/1 with Coral.
