Rapid Vienna vs Dundee United

, KO: 20:00 , Allianz Stadion
Dundee United

Dundee United have made a decent start to the new season but will have to upset the odds to keep their UEFA Conference League dream alive when they take on Rapid Vienna.

With Jim Goodwin signing so many new players in the summer, United's first Conference League qualifier with UNA Strassen was a potential banana skin.

But United ground out a 1-0 win at Tannadice then repeated the trick in Luxembourg as all three recommended bets landed for me.

The Tannadice men had a tough Premiership opener away to promoted Falkirk on Sunday but came away with a 2-2 draw as another bet came up for our man Greg.

Goodwin will be satisfied with his side's start to the campaign but will know they now face a big step up in class as they take on the Austrians in Vienna.

Rapid could only finish fifth in the league last season but they have a decent pedigree in Europe and reached the quarter-finals of the Conference League last term.

Peter Stoger's side defeated Decic Tuzi home and away in the last round of qualifiers and also beat Blau Weiss Linz in their domestic opener so their tails will be up for this one.

How the bookies view it: Goodnight Vienna for United

Dundee United have been written off for the first leg, with BoyleSports making them 8/1 rank outsiders. Rapid Vienna are just 2/7 and the draw is pretty big at 4/1.

Head to head: Hope from 1984

These sides have faced off just once before and it came during Dundee United's memorable run to the European Cup semi-finals in 1984. They beat Rapid Vienna 1-0 at Tannadice then progressed on away goals after a 2-1 defeat in Austria.

Players to watch: Dahl's a danger

Norweigan playmaker Petter Nosa Dahl has made an impressive start to the season for Rapid Vienna, with two goals in his first three games. He could be worth a punt for another strike at 21/10 with Bet365.

Zac Sapsford has started up front in all three of Dundee United's games so far and should get the nod again, The Aussie scored at home against UNA Strassen and looks United's best hope of a goal at 4/1.

Probable line-ups

Rapid Vienna have a pretty healthy squad, with only Sassuolo loanee Janis Antiste a doubt after going off late on at the weekend. Dundee United skipper Ross Graham is still out with an injury while Ryan Strain and Kristijan Trapanovski are set to be sidelined for at least the next two months.

Rapid Vienna: Hedl, Raux-Yao, Horn, Cvetkovic, Bolla, Dahl, Sangar, Amane, Radulovic, Seidl, Kara.

Dundee United: Kucherenko, Esselink, Iovu, Sevelj, Keresztes, Camara, Sibbald, Pappoe, Zapsford, Dolcek, Watters.

Anything else catch the eye?

Goodwin is quite a conservative coach so I'd imagine he will set Dundee United up to frustrate away from home. That makes betting against BTTS a decent option, although the odds aren't great at just 8/11 with BoyleSports. Backing most goals to come after the break is a bit better at 20/21.

Rapid Vienna should be too strong for United and if you back them for a win to nil it takes you into odds-against territory at 21/20.

The corner count could rack up for the Austrians if Goodwin does park the bus so that's another market worth looking at once the bookies price it up.
