Rangers vs Panathinaikos

, KO: 19:45 , Ibrox
Panathinaikos

New Rangers boss Russell Martin has been handed a daunting first assignment as Panathinaikos head to Ibrox for the first leg of a crucial UEFA Champions League qualifier.

The former Southampton boss is looking to rebuild his reputation in Scotland and has been busy revamping the squad, making six new signings so far.

Martin has also imposed his possession-based footballing philosophy so it may take a while until his new-look side gets used to the kind of football he wants to play.

The problem for Martin is that this hugely important match comes so early in his reign, with Rangers' new American owners desperate to reach the UEFA Champions League and bank a financial windfall.

This is the first of three qualifiers they will need to negotiate in order to reach the lucrative league phase and Panathinaikos are arguably the toughest opponents they could have faced at this stage.

Panathinaikos finished a distant second behind Olympiakos in Greece's top flight last term but have a settled squad and boss Rui Vitoria has been in charge since October.

The Greeks will be hoping that stability can give them the edge in this tie as they look to reach the group stage for the first time in 15 years.

How the bookies view it: Debut joy for Martin

Even though Rangers are a work in progress, BoyleSports make them 3/4 favourites for this first leg. Pananthinaikos look a bit overpriced at 14/5 and the draw pays 13/5.

Head to head: Greeks unbeaten

These sides have faced off four times before in Europe and Rangers are still waiting for their first win. Three of those clashes have ended level but Panathinaikos did win 3-1 at Ibrox 22 years ago in the Champions League group phase.

Players to watch: Dan could be the man

Rangers strikers Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane are a bit behind the rest of the squad in terms of fitness so that makes them doubts to start. Former Feyenoord forward Danilo hardly featured last term but has been impressing in pre-season friendlies and could get the nod up front. The Brazilian is 15/8 for a goal at Bet365.

Panathinaikos skipper Fotis Ioannidis should be their biggest threat after netting 15 times for club and country last term. The Greek international is also 15/8 for anytime scorer.

Probable line-ups

It will be interesting to see how many of Martin's new signings feature, although winger Djeidi Gassama and midfielder Thelo Aasgaard are unlikely to start due to fitness issues.

Panathinaikos will be without Greek international defender Giorgos Kyriakopoulos after he picked up a knee injury while winger Georgios Kyriopoulos is also crocked.

Rangers: Butland, Tavernier, Souttar, Djiga. Aarons, Rothwell, Raskin, Diomande, Bajrami, Cortes, Danilo.

Pananthinaikos: Lodygin, Vagiannidis, Touba, Jedvaj, Max, Chirivella, Siopis, Tete, Djuricic, Gregou, Ioannidis.

Anything else catch the eye?

Rangers look a little vulnerable at such an early stage of their rebuild but Ibrox has been a fortress in Europe of late and they could rise to the occasion again. Panathinaikos' price is mighty tempting but it's safer to back them in the one goal ahead market at 13/10 as that will pay out if they take the lead at any point.

With Martin determined to play out from the back, this should be a decent watch and I'd imagine we'll see goals at both ends. BTTS pays just 4/6 but you can boost the odds to 23/20 at BoyleSports by adding on over 2.5 goals.

Martin always sends his teams out to attack and dominate possession so going for Rangers corners could pay off. I like the evens on offer at Bet365 for Gers to rack up over 5.5 flag kicks.
