QUEEN OF THE SOUTH are in danger of being cut adrift at the foot of the SPFL Championship and desperately need a win when promotion hopefuls Partick Thistle come calling.
The Doonhamers are now six points behind Dunfermline in the drop zone and time is running out for them to mount a great escape, although they do have a game in hand on the Pars.
Willie Gibson will need to get his side out of a worrying tailspin as defeat in last weekend's SPFL Trust Trophy Final made it five successive defeats.
I fancied Raith Rovers to beat Queen of the South in that showpiece and dodgy defending cost Queens again as they shipped three goals.
A big improvement will be needed to see off a Partick side who are determined to hold off Raith in the scrap for that final play-off slot.
The Jags ended their own run of four successive defeats in a dreary weekend stalemate with second-placed Arbroath on the awful Firhill pitch.
It's not often players look forward to playing on a plastic pitch but that will be the case at Palmerston for Partick as they leave their mudheap behind.
Ian McCall's side need a win just as much as Queen of the South so it will be fascinating to see who comes out on top.
How the bookies view it
It's no great surprise to see Partick Thistle as favourites but they're still a decent price at 5/4 with Bet365. Queen of the South are as big as 23/10 with BoyleSports while the draw pays the same price at Betfred.
Recent head to head
Queens knocked Thistle out of the SPFL Trust trophy with a 2-0 win at Palmerston (below) but that's their only victory in the last seven meetings. It ended 0-0 when these teams last faced off down south in the Championship while the Jags have won both Firhill encounters this term.
Players to watch
Ally Roy has scored in two of his last three games for Queen of the South and looks their best bet for a goal here. The Northern Irishman is 16/5 with Paddy Power for anytime scorer.
Partick defender Kevin Holt is coming up against one of his old clubs and could haunt them. The full-back has five goals to his name this term and scored the winner from the spot when these sides last faced off. That makes him a good long-odds option at 5/1 with Paddy Power.
Anything else catch the eye?
Both teams to score has failed to land in five of the last six meetings but I've a feeling this match could buck the trend. BTTS has come up in Thistle's last four away games and in two of the last three matches for Queens. A point doesn't really suit either side here so I can see an open game and backing both teams to score pays 21/20 at BoyleSports.
The half-time draw has come up in the last three meetings and that makes it worth a punt again here at 17/16 with SBK.
