Plymouth Argyle vs Barnsley

, KO: 15:00 , Home Park
Barnsley

Plymouth Argyle are looking to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking but have a tricky League One opener as Barnsley come calling.

There was an air of optimism around Home Park a year ago as Argyle prepared to kick off a new era under high-profile boss Wayne Rooney.

But the former England and Manchester United legend was sacked on Hogmanay, with Plymouth sitting bottom of the pile after winning just four of their 23 league games.

Successor Miron Musilic made a decent fist of keeping them up and also gave the fans a day to remember as they knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup.

But the Austrian moved on after their relegation was confirmed and former Watford boss Tom Cleverley is the man charged with leading their promotion push this term.

Cleverley's reign kicks off against a Barnsley side who will also be looking to mount a bid to go up after a disappointing campaign that saw them finish in 12th place.

Rookie boss Conor Hourihane stood in for Darrell Clarke after he was sacked in March and now has the job full-time as he bids to gets the Tykes back on the up.

How the bookies view it: Plymouth ready to rock

With the Home Park crowd behind them, Plymouth are 20/21 favourites with BoyleSports to get Cleverley off to a winning start. Barnsley are 2/1 outsiders and the draw pays 11/4.

Recent head to head: Barnsley on top

This fixture has been closely fought in recent years but Barnsley have the edge, with five wins from the last 10 meetings. Plymouth have won three of those games, with the other two drawn. They last faced off in League One three seasons ago, with a 1-0 win for Argyle at Home Park followed by a 3-0 home triumph for the Tykes.

Players to watch: A Dunn deal at 49/20

Winger Davis Keillor-Dunn had the best campaign of his career last term, hitting the 20-goal mark for Barnsley. That should have alerted bigger clubs but he remains at Oakwell and looks overpriced at 49/20 with Unibet for a goal here.

Plymouth are still looking for a centre forward after the departures of Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu. Youngster Aribim Pepple may start up top in this one and the summer signing from Luton is 15/8 at Bet365 for a debut goal.

Probable line-ups

Plymouth remain without long-term crock Brendan Galloway while Barnsley stoppers Josh Earl and Marc Roberts are also set to miss out. Both managers will need to decide how many of the summer signings they throw in for debuts.

Plymouth Argyle: Hazard, MacKenzie, Pleguezuelo, Szucs, Edwards, Mumba, Ibrahim, Patterson, Amaechi, Issaka, Pepple.

Barnsley: Copper, Gent, Ogberta, Lopata, Shepherd, Connell, Russell, Vickers, Keillor-Dunn, Jalo, Dallas.

Anything else catch the eye?

With Barnsley missing a couple of centre-backs due to injury, Plymouth should have enough quality to get the win. Adding on over 1.5 goals to the home win boosts the odds to 11/8 at BoyleSports.

Cleverley's Watford side were decent value for BTTS seekers last term, with that bet landing in seven of their first 12 games of the season. It only pays 1/2 here at BoyleSports but adding on over 2.5 goals takes you to 20/23.

There's not a great deal between these sides so the half-time draw is also worth a look at 5/4 with BoyleSports.
