Hibernian vs St Johnstone

, KO: 15:00 Sep 14, 2024, Easter Road
St Johnstone

HIBS entertain St Johnstone after the resumption of the Premiership following the international break.

And both sides have had mixed starts to the season.

For the hosts, new manager David Gray was almost immediately under pressure after a disastrous Premier Sports Cup loss at League One minnows Kelty Hearts followed by a hammering at St Mirren and two limp defeats to Celtic.

In fairness, they should have bounced back and won both of their next two games against in-form Dundee and Kilmarnock but twice conceded injury times goals to drop points and they are still looking for their first league win of the season.

St Johnstone had a fine win at Kilmarnock, but since then the wheels have come off somewhat.

They lost at Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup and then went down to defeats at Dundee United and lost a last gasp goal at Motherwell last week.

So both sides have reason to get a win on the board in the capital with a combined one win in eight between the pair.

How the bookies view it: Hibs odds-on favourites.

The hosts are odds-on across the board with William Hill's 7/10 the best price so far.

Saints can be backed at 4/1 with McBookie.com and the draw is 15/4 with Paddy Power.

Recent head to heads: On a knife's edge.

There was nothing between the sides last season with two wins apiece with a win each at home and away.

Players to watch: Benji the boy

Saints' Swedish striker Benji Kimpioka has been in excellent form this season with seven goals so far including the equaliser last week against Motherwell. He is 4/1 with bet365.

Martin Boyle was on international duty with Australia this week and he is always a danger. He is 19/10 to score anytime with UniBet.

Predicted line-ups:

Hibs could use Jake Doyle-Hayes, Elie Youan and Junior Hoilett, who are all approaching full fitness.

St Johnstone are without the suspended Adama Sidibeh

Hibernian: Bursik, Miller, Ekpiteta, O'Hora, Obita, Newell, Kwon, Triantis, Molotnikov, Bowie, Boyle.

St Johnstone: Sinclair, Neilson, Sanders, Cameron, Wright, Essel, MacPherson, Smith, Raymond, Clark, Kimpioka.

Anything else catch the eye?

To back a Hibs team that have yet to win a league game this season at odds-on is just too much of a leap of faith to take on a home side who have yet to give punters any indication of their trustworthiness.

With the squad at his disposal, David Gray should be able to get a tune out of his Hibs side and he might yet manage that, but it could take time to gel.

St Johnstone have opened up this season and the dour negativity of last season seems a thing of the past so far anyway.

They have goals in them and so do Hibs, so take the 49/50 with UniBet on both teams scoring in Leith.

It could be a tight encounter here and it could pay to back the half time draw – with the hosts sharing the spoils after 45 minutes in their last two games – at 6/5 with bet365.
