12 years on from that controversial quarter-final clash in South Africa, Ghana and Uruguay meet again in a must win Group H tie on Friday at the Fifa World Cup.
Ghana claimed 3-2 victory over South Korea in their previous Group H fixture at the World Cup. They appeared to have let a two-goal first half lead slip before Mohammed Kudus struck the winner midway through the second period.
Having lost their opening fixture, the win over South Korea put them in a great position to progress as victory on Friday will guarantee a place in the round of 16. Otto Addo’s men are likely to be fired up against Uruguay, who denied them a semi-final place in 2010 following Luis Suarez’s late goal-line handball.
Ghana have been one of the most exciting teams at this World Cup, often playing some free flowing attacking football. However, their style often has an adverse effect on their defensive structure, and they have conceded five goals in just two matches in Qatar.
Uruguay are coming off a 2-0 defeat to Portugal in their previous Group H fixture. They were on the back foot for much of the contest and only came to life after the former European champions had taken the lead.
The defeat means Uruguay are on the brink of crashing out of the tournament as they are currently bottom of the group. However, they still have a chance of progressing to the round of 16 as a win on Friday could see them qualify.
Manager Diego Alonso has adopted a largely conservative approach in Qatar which has seen them fail to register a single goal in Qatar. However, given the importance of Friday’s clash, Uruguay are likely to be a lot more adventurous.
How the bookies view it
Despite being winless in Qatar, Uruguay are still considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies at 10/13 with SBK. A victory for Ghana is valued at 4/1 by Unibet while a draw is set at odds of 5/2 by BetVictor.
Head to head
The only previous meeting between Ghana and Uruguay was that controversial quarter-final clash back in 2010 which ended 1-1 after extra-time. The Uruguayans won the shootout only after Luis Suarez had cleared a goal-bound effort with his hands and the Ghanaians missed the subsequent penalty.
Players to watch
Mohammed Kudus has been one of the shining lights for Ghana in Qatar and netted a brace in the win over South Korea. The attacker could be worth keeping an eye on to score anytime at 9/2 with William Hill.
Luis Suarez featured off the bench against Portugal and could be handed a start on Friday. The striker has history with Ghana and could be the one to watch for Uruguay at 7/4 with bet365.
Anything else catch the eye?
An open encounter is likely to favour the attackers, which means both teams could be backed to score at evens with Unibet. Ghana have seen over 3.5 goals in both their matches in Qatar and a similar outcome is priced at 5/2 with Betfred, who are also offering 27/25 for over 2.5 goals.
Matches in Group H have produced more goals after the break and Friday’s clash could be tipped to follow a similar pattern at 11/10 with Paddy Power.
