Germany vs Denmark

, KO: 20:00 Jun 29, 2024, Singal Iduna Park
Denmark

GERMAN fans are starting to dream of Euro 2024 glory after watching their side breeze through the group stage but Denmark could be a tough nut to crack as the last 16 gets underway.

Julian Nagelsmann's men are top scorers at the tournament so far with eight goals, albeit five of those came against a pitiful Scotland side in the opening game as a bet landed for our man Mark.

Performance levels have dropped a bit since that 5-1 rout, with Hungary unlucky to lose 2-0 against the Germans before the Swiss came within a few minutes of claiming a 1-0 victory.

Niclas Fullkrug salvaged a 1-1 draw with a late header in that game and will be hoping his second goal off the bench at the Euros now earns him a starting slot.

Germany look a better side with the Dortmund target man up front instead of Kai Havertz playing as a false nine so it will be interesting to see what team Nagelsmann picks.

Denmark will certainly be a tricky side to break down, with Kasper Hjulmand's men drawing all three of their group games and conceding just two goals in the process.

The Danes frustrated England in a 1-1 draw, busting the coupon of our man Gabriel, and if they play to the same standard, this could be a tricky hurdle for the host nation.

How the bookies view it: Denmark written off

Despite going off the boil in their last game, Germany are still heavy favourites to win in 90 minutes at 8/13 with Betfred. The Danes are 5/1 outsiders and the draw pays 11/4.

Head to head: Nothing to set these nations apart

The teams have faced off nine times since German reunification, and its honours even with three wins apiece and three draws. The last two meetings have ended level although both those games were friendlies. The Germans beat Denmark 2-1 at Euro 2012 and that avenged their 2-0 loss to the Danes in the Euro 92 showpiece.

Last five H2H duels:

  • 02/06/2021 (International Friendly) – Germany 1-1 Demark
  • 06/06/2017 (International Friendly) – Denmark 1-1 Germany
  • 17/06/2012 (EURO) – Denmark 1-2 Germany
  • 11/08/2010 (International Friendly) – Denmark 2-2 Germany
  • 28/03/2007 (International Friendly) – Germany 0-1 Demark

Players to watch: Musiala out to sprinkle more magic

Bayern Munich playmaker Jamal Musiala has been the man making Germany tick at these finals and has also added an end product with two goals. The 21-year-old is 11/5 for anytime scorer and is also worth checking out in the assist market when some prices are drafted up.

Both of Denmark's goals at the finals have come from midfielders, with the strikers acting more as link men. Veteran Christian Eriksen scored against Slovenia, and the Manchester United man is 11/2 to repeat the trick in Dortmund.

Probable line-ups

Nagelsmann has problems in defence with Jonathan Tah suspended and Antonio Rudiger an injury doubt. His biggest call is whether to start Fullkrug ahead of Havertz in attack.

Denmark have midfielder Morten Hjulmand suspended and Jonas Wind could lose his place up front after being hooked at half-time against Serbia.

Germany: Neuer; Kimmich, Schlotterbeck, Anton, Mittelstadt; Kroos, Andrich; Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz; Fullkrug

Denmark: Schmeichel; Andersen, Christensen, Vestergaard; Bah, Hojbjerg, Delaney, Maehle; Eriksen; Hojlund, Dolberg

Anything else catch the eye?

With Denmark yet to taste defeat in the whole tournament and the last two meetings ending in draws, this should be a tight game. The half-time stalemate looks good at 23/20 while over 2.5 goals might stand a chance at evens given the Germans have kept just one clean sheet so far and have problems in defence.

Two of Denmark's group games hit double figures for corners, so that market could be worth a look, with over 9.5 flag kicks priced at 5/6.
