The quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League begin on Thursday with Feyenoord hosting Roma in a repeat of last season’s Conference League final.
Feyenoord are into the quarter-finals of the Europa League after claiming an 8-2 aggregate victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the previous round. After being held to a 1-1 draw in the first meeting, they returned to De Kuip for a 7-1 victory.
Much of Feyenoord’s campaign in the Europa League has followed a similar pattern with De Kuip often proving pivotal for the Dutch side. Arne Slot’s men are unbeaten in their last four home matches in the competition with a 6-0 victory over Strum Graz among their results while they also edged out Serie A side Lazio 1-0 during the group stage.
Overall, Feyenoord have had success balancing their domestic campaign with their continental engagements and have claimed three wins in four matches since seeing off Shakhtar Donetsk. They head into Thursday’s clash off the back of a 5-1 victory over RKC Waalwijk in a domestic fixture last Sunday.
Roma claimed a 2-0 aggregate victory over Spanish side Real Sociedad to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The bulk of the job was done at the Stadio Olimpico where they won 2-0 before holding out for a 0-0 draw in Spain.
The current Conference League holders have thrived on the vast experience of manager Jose Mourinho, who is adept at navigating European competitions. All of that has been clear to see this season as Roma are unbeaten in five of their last six Europa League matches.
Like Feyenoord, Roma have also impressed in recent weeks, winning their last two Serie A matches. First, they claimed a 3-0 victory at Sampdoria before edging out Torino 1-0 last Sunday with Paulo Dybala’s early penalty proving the difference.
