Dundee United vs Rapid Vienna

, KO: 19:45 , Tannadice
Rapid Vienna

Dundee United returned to Scotland with an impressive 2-2 draw from the first leg of their Europa Conference League third qualifying round tie at Rapid Vienna.

And they will have an expectant full house at Tannadice urging them to get the job done against the Austrian giants.

United had a struggle in the last round against Luxembourg outfit UNA Strassen and eventually won through after a pair of very hard-fought 1-0 wins home and away.

They were written off for this tie, but more than held their own in the Austrian capital and could be proud of that draw.

At the weekend, their exertions probably caught up with them and they let slip a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 at home to Hearts.

But the opposite was true for Rapid Vienna, who overturned a one-goal deficit to win at Austrian Bundesliga champions Sturm Graz in a 2-1 victory.

The reward for the winners will be a very winnable play-off game against either AIK Stockholm or FC Gyor so there are plenty of incentives for both sides on Thursday.

How the bookies view it: Rapid still odds-on for progress

Despite United getting a draw in Austria and having a full Tannadice roaring them on, they are still 13/5 outsiders with the visitors 4/6. The draw is also 13/5 all with Boylesports.

Recent head to heads: Famous Tannadice triumph

United famously met Rapid Vienna in the 1984 European Cup quarter final on their way to reaching the semis. A Davie Dodds goal saw them overturn a 2-1 first leg defeat to qualify on away goals back then.

Obviously, they also met last week, which finished 2-2 as stated.

Players to watch: Ivan the not-so Terrible

United ace Ivan Dolcek netted a double against Hearts and was still on the losing side. The Croat is 9/2 to score anytime with William Hill.

Petter Nosakhare Dahl scored against both United and Sturm Graz in his last two games and is 13/5 to score anytime with Ladbrokes.

Predicted line-ups:

United have plenty of injury worries with Isaac Pappoe, Ryan Strain, Kristijan Trapanovski, Ross Graham, Dario Naamo, Amar Fatah and Max Watters all having knocks or injuries.

Rapid Vienna must decide whether to use Niki Wurmbrand and Nenad Cvetkovic who were both rested at the weekend.

Dundee United: Kucherenko, Iovu, Esselink, Keresztes, Ferry, Sevelj, Sibbald, Camará, Dolcek, Watters, Sapsford.

Rapid Vienna: Hedl, Yao, Dahl, Sangare, Seidl, Marcelin, Romeo, Horn, Radulovic, Bolla, Antiste.

Anything else catch the eye?

Rapid had only themselves to blame in the first leg after they missed a host of chances and sadly for United, they may well learn their lessons for the second leg with the hosts likely to be more open.

Rapid are a very decent side and may have too much for Jim Goodwin's men, who are depleted with plenty of injuries.

The visitors scored two goals at Sturm Graz – regular Champions League participants – and you should back them to score two on Tayside too at 8/11 with Ladbrokes.

Rapid won the corner count 10-2 in the first leg and they could win a few on a tight pitch. Back them -2 on the corners handicap at 21/20 with bet365.
