Clyde vs Motherwell

, KO: 15:00 , New Douglas Park
Motherwell

Motherwell find themselves under new management yet again and Jens Berthel Askou should get his reign off to a winning start when the Steelmen take on Clyde in the League Cup group stage.

The Fir Park club went down the foreign route when naming a successor for Stuart Kettlewell back in January and Michael Wimmer looked to be settling in nicely as he steered them to an eighth-placed finish in the SPFL Premiership.

But the German then sprung a surprise by quitting at the end of the season, returning home with third-tier Jahn Regensburg so he could be closer to his family.

That left Motherwell on the search for a gaffer again and they stuck with the same formula by appointing Askou, who had been working for FC Copenhagen as assistant manager.

The Dane has inherited a decent enough squad, although it will be a surprise if star player Lennon Miller is still at Fir Park by the time the summer transfer window closes.

Askou will be looking to build some momentum in the League Cup group games before the Premiership gets underway and it would be a surprise if Clyde ruined his competitive dugout debut,

The Bully Wee could only finish seventh in League Two last term but they have a shrewd boss in Darren Young and should be a better team now he's had a summer to reshape the squad.

How the bookies view it: Debut joy for Askou

With three divisions separating these sides, it's no surprise to see Motherwell as 1/4 favourites with BoyleSports. Clyde are 7/1 to spring a shock and the draw pays 4/1.

Head to head: Seven and hell for Clyde

These sides faced off in the League Cup group stage last year and Motherwell emerged as 3-1 victors. That made it seven wins in a row over Clyde since a 0-0 draw way back in 1985.

Players to watch: Maswanhise up to speed

Striker Tawanda Maswanhise impressed in spells for Motherwell last season and finished the campaign with six goals to his name. The Zimbabwean's pace could trouble Clyde's defence but I've yet to see any prices for scorer bets.

Liam Scullion was voted Clyde's Player of the Year last term and the club have received a boost with the 23-year-old signing a new one-year deal. He scored five times from midfield last term so Well will need to keep an eye on him.

Probable line-ups

Clyde snapped up former Annan midfielder Kyle Fleming on Tuesday and he could be in contention for a debut along with fellow new boys James Hilton and Sam Campbell.

Striker Zach Robinson is still out injured for Motherwell while new boy Eseosa Sule pressed his claims for a start with an impressive cameo in the midweek friendly win over Carlisle.

Clyde: Kinnear, Lyon, Campbell, Howie, Robson, Hynes, Lyon, Scullion, Fleming, Hilton, Connell.

Motherwell: Oxborough, McGinn, Gordon, McGhee, Wilson, Halliday, Miller, Watt, Fadinger, Maswanhise, Sule.

Anything else catch the eye?

Motherwell haven't set the heather alight in their pre-season friendlies, losing 3-0 to Twente then grinding out a 1-0 win over Carlisle. With a new manager still trying to stamp his mark on the team, I fancy a Motherwell win with under 3.5 goals at 23/20 with BoyleSports.

With the Steelmen keeping a clean sheet in midweek, it suggests Askou has them well drilled at the back so a win to nil for the Premier League side could also be worth a punt at 11/10.

It could take Askou's side a while to click into gear and that makes backing most goals to come after the break another good option at 10/11.
