Ayr United vs Queen's Park

, KO: 19:45 Apr 21, 2023, Somerset Park
Queen's Park

IF there's a more exciting league in Europe than the Scottish Championship then we've yet to see it, with Ayr United and Queen's Park set to serve up a Friday night cracker.

It seems to be the league no one wants to win. At various stages it looked like Dundee or Queen's Park had the title in the bag, only to slip up yet again.

That opened the door for Partick Thistle, but they blew it last week too. Now Inverness have come from nowhere with a late charge to win six games in a row and put themselves right in the mix too.

Ayr have actually been one of the more consistent sides – they've never quite looked likely to push on and win it, but they have always been in a play-off spot…until midweek where they dropped to fifth because of Caley Thistle's win at Hamilton.

The Spiders grabbed a huge win last week against Accies to end a run of three losses in a row without a goal.

Owen Coyle's men are desperate to take it to a last day shootout with Dundee, but they still have to go and win at Somerset Park on Friday and Cappielow next week to do that.

How the bookies view it

Ayr are favourites here at 11/10 with Paddy Power. Queen's Park can be backed at 21/10 with bet365 and the draw is 12/5 with McBookie.com.

Recent head to heads

Ayr thumped Queen's Park 5-0 at Somerset Park back in October, but the former amateurs won their last meeting in February at Ochilview.

Queen's haven't won in Ayr for 16 years.

Players to watch

Ayr have done extremely well to hold on to Dipo Akinyemi this season and he bagged his 24th goal of the season at Firhill last weekend. He is 5/4 to score with William Hill.

Grant Savoury has been a key man for Queen's Park this season and the former Celtic kid scored his 14th goal of the season in last week's win over Accies. He is 11/4 to score anytime with William Hill.

Anything else catch the eye?

Ayr were impressive last week in the second half against an in-form Partick Thistle side and bossed the game. And they could be too strong for a Spiders side who appear to have run out of gas at just the wrong time.

The Honest Men have had a breather and have been disappointing away from home, but they should be backed by a noisy Ayrshire crowd and a win would take them up to third with just a couple of games left.

They've had a run of away games and only played twice at home since the start of March and can get the job done by scoring at least twice at 20/21 with McBookie.com.
