Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur

, KO: 19:30 , Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur

Aston Villa are chasing down a Champions League slot and it would be a major surprise if they slipped up at home to a Tottenham Hotspur side stumbling through the worst Premier League campaign in their history.

Una Emery's men boost their chances of a top-five finish by grinding out a 1-0 win at Bournemouth last Saturday, with Ollie Watkins' strike in first-half stoppage time leaving me empty handed.

Results elsewhere last weekend also went Villa's way, with Chelsea losing at Newcastle and Nottingham Forest dropping points at home to relegated Leicester.

They now trail fifth-placed Chelsea only on goal difference and are just three points behind the third-placed Magpies so banking six points in their final two games should get the job done.

Villa are fortunate that they close out their season against Spurs and Manchester United, with both those sides having one eye on the Europa League showpiece.

The run to that Euro final is the only thing that has saved Ange Postecoglou's skin after a disastrous domestic campaign.

Sunday's 2-0 loss at home to Crystal Palace, which brought up two bets for Slips Tips, was Tottenham's 20th defeat of the Premier League season and they now sit fourth bottom.

So they appear ill-equipped for a clash with this motivated Villa side as Postecoglou's players look ahead to Wednesday's big night out in Bilbao.

How the bookies view it: Spurs written off at 6/1

Tottenham are 6/1 rank outsiders at BoyleSports thanks to their dismal league form. Aston Villa are 4/11 hot favourites and the draw pays 15/4.

Recent head to head: Little in it

This fixture has been closely fought in the last few season, with Spurs winning seven of the last 12 meetings and losing five. It's honours even this season with a 4-1 league win for Tottenham followed by a 2-1 Villa triumph in the FA Cup.

Players to watch: Morgan's the man

Ollie Watkins heads into this game with his tail up after his weekend winner made him Aston Villa's all-time top scorer in the Premier League. But he's just 8/11 at BoyleSports to add to his 75-goal tally here so Morgan Rogers offers more value at 13/8 for anytime scorer. The 3/1 on offer at Bet365 for an assist looks more tempting to me.

Spurs should field a shadow side ahead of the Euro showpiece with winger Wilson Odobert likely to be among those who start. He's 9/2 for anytime scorer.

Probable line-ups

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey is suspended after his harsh red card at Bournemouth while Marcus Rashford and Youri Tielemans looks set to miss out again with injuries.

Dejan Kulusevski limped off for Spurs on Sunday so looks set to sit this one out along with Lucas Bergvall, Radu Dragusin and James Maddison. Son-Heung Min returned from injury off the bench at the weekend and should get another cameo role.

Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne, Kamara, Onana, Rogers, McGinn, Asensio, Watkins.

Tottenham Hotspur: Kinsky, Danso, Porro, Spence, Davies, Gray, Sarr , Bissouma, Tel, Moore, Odobert.

Anything else catch the eye?

With Tottenham likely to field a second-string side, a Villa win to nil looks worth a punt for this one and it pays 17/10 at BoyelSports. I also like the 20/21 available for Emery's side to be winning at half-time and full-time.

I'd imagine the home side will have most of the pressure as well so backing Villa at -2.5 in the corner handicap could also pay off at 11/10.

Spurs players will be out to avoid injuries ahead of the final so I'd be surprised if we saw a lot of cards. Under 37.5 booking points pays 5/6 at Betfred while betting against both teams picking up a card is 9/4 at Bet365.
