AN eventful week ended with a last-minute goal beating my new Betting Club attempt but I can't really complain.

So it's ironic I go 11 winners in a row then fall at the first hurdle next time round with Serbia draw no bet in Austria.

Still, I know what last-minute goal I'd rather have had and that was Harry Kane's against Slovenia.

My Georgia draw no bet Super Single was a loser as Wales deservedly won for the first time in four years without Gareth Bale.

It's been a difficult week for finding betting value and I finally landed my first treble of the month thanks to wins to nil by Spain and Republic of Ireland as well as a victory for England Under-21s who beat Scotland 3-1.

Saturday isn't easy with more World Cup ties – mostly involving short-priced favourites – as well as English League One and Two matches and difficult to call Irn-Bru Cup games in Scotland.

I won't be putting up as many bets as usual and in fact not adding to those I posted last night.

The Super Single is under 3.5 goals at Sweden v Luxembourg and I'm thinking back to last month when France were held 0-0 at home by the so-called minnows. They defended brilliantly that night and if they do the same in Stockholm there won't be many goals.

Notts County kick off the Top Treble at home to basement boys Forest Green. County had won six in a row before losing to near neighbours Mansfield last week and should get back on track against a side that's struggled to adapt since being promoted.

Add Lincoln who have settled fairly since moving up. They face second-bottom Chesterfield who have lost five on the spin in the league and picked up just one point at home.

Complete the treble with Portugal to win to nil when they visit minnows Andorra. Not a big price but OK to add to a double.

Heading away for the next day and a bit for my birthday, so posting all the match previews for the A-League now.

Central Coast Mariners v Newcastle Jets
It’s the big F3 derby! Mariners have made some additions to their squad with Baro coming in, as well as Brama and Asdrubal. They have lost important players Hoole and Roux for this one, but overall have had a good pre-season and should challenge again this year. De Silva and Pain add some attacking options as well to the squad.

Jets enter this one after a decent pre-season as well. Old boy Ernie Merrick (who has coached everyone in the A-League by now), makes a welcome return as the coach, and he’s brought in firebrand O’Donovan, Vargas, and strong defenders Topor-Stanley and Boogaard. The absence of Moss in between the sticks is a bad one though, as he’s a solid keeper and without him they are always more susceptible.

For me, Mariners are the more likely.

    Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC
Victory face Sydney in a badly timed match for the home side. Coach Muscat has been out in the press complaining that the league doesn’t recognise FIFA windows, as he’s missing host of key players heading into a game against a class side. Milligan, Troisi and Barbarouses are all on international duty. Their pre-season has been strong, but against a fierce Sydney side… not the start Muscat would want.

Sydney have retained most of their side from last year, a side which utterly dominated the league. Not much to say other than they’ve looked as good as last year in the pre-season games.

    Tips:
    Mariners (0) asian handicap @ 1.80
    Victory v Sydney – over 2.5 goals @ 1.82
Sydney – over 1.5 team goals @ evens

Obi how you think the mariners will cope this year with losing the likes of Montgomery, Ferreira and Donovan? Watched them a fair bit last year ( my A league team if you wish) and those 3 were important players for them

    • Avatar of Ashe Potter
obi wan cannoli 7 years ago

Hey Sean, sorry for the delayed response. Been away the last 30 hours.

O’Donovan and Ferreira are both replaceable losses. Both are solid players, but Asdruval is decent and did play a half-decent game (given his team got belted!). The loss of Montgomery though is significant. Monty was the captain and always held the midfield together, anchoring defense and attack. You’ll note every time he played, Mariners always played vastly better than when he didn’t.

They haven’t really replaced him this season… and whilst I thought Mariners would do enough to get at least a point yesterday, I didn’t anticipate the shambolic first half… that in fairness was only about 20 minutes of madness. For the other 70 minutes, the Mariners were okay, but Jets had done enough to lock it down, and just punished them on the counter after that point.

So yes, the loss of Montgomery may well plague them until they bring in someone of his caliber who can marshal the squad and hold everything together.

    Now onto Sunday’s matches!

    Wellington Phoenix v Adelaide United
This match is going to be really unpredictable. Phoenix have lost a host of players (Smeltz, Barbarouses, Rodriguez, Lia and Bonevacia), and have brought in minimal players to replace them. Vidosic, Abbas and Mullen have all joined, who are decent enough players… but in my mind are weaker than what they lost. Phoenix are always tough at home though, so it would be unwise to rule them out completely.

Adelaide were shocking last year, and as a result sacked most of their squad and coach at the end of the season. They’ve brought in a host of talented players, including big name Gulum (which sounds terribly close to Gollum), and new coach Kruz. I fancy Adelaide to trouble the Phoenix here, but am not sure on the result.

Western Sydney Wanderers v Perth Glory
For the last game of round 1, we have a solid looking Wanderers side against the Glory. Wanderers have been in blistering form in pre-season, but were surprised when coach Popavic walked from the club. They have added to ton of quality players to their ranks though, in Riera, Bonevacia, Risdon and others, and really look on paper to be a title challenger this year.

Perth have lost a number of players, crucially Risdon to their opponents today, and look really weak in defense. They do have some good attacking players… but I don’t like their chances against the Wanderers.

    Tips:
    Adelaide- goal before 53rd min @ 1.83
    Wanderers win @ 1.90

Hope everyone has a cracker of a weekend! :)

Not the easiest of Saturday cards, I don’t think.

Three sides that I think should net are Stevenage, Shrewsbury and Weston.

Stevenage visit a Crewe side in dire form. They have lost their last 5 on the trot, conceding 13 in the process, while they have only kept one clean sheet at home this season. I backed Stevenage last week and though they aren’t too prolific, these consistent scorers ought to bag at a struggling side.

Shrewsbury top the League 1 table and have only lost in the league cup to Championship opposition. Unbeaten in the league, scoring in every fixture this season, yet they find themselves marginal underdogs when visiting Walsall? Strange. Walsall are unbeaten at home but haven’t kept a clean sheet in those games. Fair price on offer for Shrewsbury to net.

Weston and Hemel games have been bonkers in recent times (0-5, 3-5, 5-5, 2-4, 1-6) and either side have played out their fair share of goal heavy games this season. Weston usually score and concede on their travels and the only true value on offer in this game is on Weston scoring. With 13 in their last 5 in the league, I’ll take that risk.

    Stevenage
    Shrewsbury
    Weston

One game that stands out to me in the National League South sees St Albans welcome Bath City. Current form of either side doesn’t exactly scream goals, but St Albans’ home form does.

My eyes usually widen when I see them down to play at home because all 8 league and FA Cup qualifiers have seen BTTS and Overs land, even against weaker opposition. They’re usually much tighter and quieter on the road and as such sit in the top three. Last season they were fantastic to follow at home, too, until falling off the rails a little towards the end of the season.

Bath games aren’t usually filled with goals, but BTTS has often landed this season (9 of 12 league games). This is more consistent when they travel, with BTTS and Overs landing in 5 of 6 away games, including in three 1-2 victories. Their only quiet away game saw them win 0-1 at Concord – Concord sit second bottom, averaging less than 2 goals a game at home and scoring just 8 in 12.

St Albans’ home scoring form, Bath City’s consistent scoring form – especially on the road, and St Albans’ apparent ability to concede to anyone at home makes me fancy goals yet again in this one.

The more than fair price on offer was enough to tempt.

2 derbys in oz today- the F3 and the big blue. Nothing to go on in the way of form obviously but I reckon both will be keenly contested affairs with a few cards flying about. I watched the mariners a lot last year and despite being one of the poorer teams in the league they gave almost everyone a game at home, and the formation and style they play led to a lot of corners. They were also pretty hopeless at the back however and barely kept a clean sheet so For the first game I’m going for a goals/corners/cards small stakes patent.

Been mad busy so haven’t been on for a while. Mostly been doing in-plays as that is definitely the way to go & you invariably get better odds as it’s not often that a goal or try is scored early doors. Rugby: The Kiwi’s love Cape Town and I expect them to bring their best again for the Boks. Will wait a few minutes & see how the Boks come out but will definitely be on All Blacks total & handicap….expect a big win! Also expect the Aussies to win later on against the Pumas & they should cover too. Darts: The Wizard vs SuperChin over 7.5 sets (5/6). In-play for the total 180’s. Expect a few for sure. UFC 216 Werdum/Ferguson double (Evens). Johnson via KO/TKO/Subm (8/11). Duquesnoy/Bibulatov double (5/6). Enjoy

All the 1-9s or 1-10s I considered came in but as you said Notts County which was suggested would have been another nailbiter.
Funny thing is 4 of us who go golfing in France each year pick 2 sides to score each for a £20 acca and today we were waiting on Notts County to put another few beers in the kitty.

Absolutely worst SS ever – I don’t do too many unders but how can Sweden score 8 against Luxembourg and France can’t score any.

Lost – Portugal not able to muster a goal in the first half – Ronaldo not starting didn’t help

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 7 years ago

Just shows how reliant they are on Ronaldo. Didn’t start him in case he got booked and missed the Switzerland game but surely his chances of being booked against Andorra were slim.

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit

With Bosnia losing we are guaranteed one of the play-off places if we win.
Neither Greece nor Bosnia can beat us – remember Greece’s points in their last game against Gibraltar will be knocked off.

    Lithuania v England
England win -1.5 asian handicap at evens.
Dead rubber this game as already qualified but this means there is no pressure on England which in turn will mean england can showboat in this game.a 2 nil isnt much to ask against this Lithuania team.

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 7 years ago

Agree with that – I see Butland stating instead of Hart.
England should win to nil – Lithuania were rank rotten against us last month and couldn’t even beat Malta last week.
