If theres one thing I need to learn its to relax on a Saturday, so many options on all sports, thinking at 9am I’l be bookin holidays at 5pm when Id be lucky to win a sausage supper! So my aim tonorrow is to pick out a l15 on the horses and leave it at that:)

Unlucky with tac today John b. Just highlights how much a cheating environment horse racing is. Apparently Niven pulled cookie out of a race less than 7 days ago due to soft ground! Cheaters!!

  8. Yves 3 years ago

I quite like all of James Doyle’s rides in the first five at Ascot. I’ll lucky 31 that and see what the usual suspects on here are saying to it later.

I hear what your saying Kendog, That’s why I am posting these up now, going to bed a doing something else other than looking at form books all day tomorrow … See ya all on Sunday Morning.

Saturday’s Victoria Cup at Ascot looks devilishly difficult and, and as a result, we’re having two stabs at finding the winner.

Saturday’s big betting handicap on the flat is the Victoria Cup over 7f at Ascot (due off 3.45pm) and the fact bookmakers are betting 12/1 the field tells you how fiendishly competitive it is.

Where to start? Perhaps the stats will give us a clue and a glance over recent results suggest we should be looking at a four or five-year-old rated in the 90s and proven over 7f. The latter is especially true as it takes a certain type of horse to excel over the trip and it’s no coincidence that eight of the last ten winners had been successful over it. That’s a black mark against the fancied Dream Spirit, who has so far been confined to a mile, and Zarwaan as he’s a 6f winner who has been campaigned over a mile of late. They are bet365’s 12/1 joint favourites.

Two down, 27 to go. We need to be more ruthless in whittling down the field and – having spent far too long studying form / watching videos – I’m going to come down on the side of a couple of northern-trained runners starting with David O’Meara’s RUSSIAN REALM. Formerly trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who saddled him to win a couple of races, including one of 7f, he’s making his stable debut this afternoon. O’Meara’s ability to improve horses sent to him from other yards is second to none and the five-year-old is even more likely to benefit from his magic touch having been gelded since his last run.

A winner over 7f at Goodwood last May, he was then sent off favourite for the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot only to disappoint. Still, 9th of 22 was not a bad effort and the very fast ground was probably against him. He was later disqualified after testing positive for a banned substance, which may or may not have affected his performance, and he had an excuse when finishing eighth on his final start on Champions Day here in October, being drawn on the ‘wrong’ side.

I get the impression we are yet to see the very best of him and in the hope the gelding operation and a switch of stables will do the trick, he looks well worth chancing at 14/1. Being 24 of 29 probably doesn’t harm his chances either as there was a high bias in last year’s race – the first four were drawn 25, 29, 21 and 23 – and we also have the champion jockey riding for us. O’Meara is actually triple handed with Highland Acclaim and So Beloved also representing him, but the latter is potentially poorly drawn in stall three and I’m convinced we’re on the right one.

The other to back is SHARED EQUITY who represents the North Yorkshire stable of Jedd O’Keefe and is the mount of talented 5lb claimer Joe Doyle. A ready winner over 7f at Newcastle last August, when earning the form comment “kept on strongly final furlong”, he made an encouraging return to action this term when finishing a close-up third over 6f on Lincoln day. With that run under his belt and over a more suitable trip, he looks sure to run a big race from stall 26.

Nice work Alanm, I like O’meara in these big handicaps, going to throw a few quid at that one for now and have a look myself to see if there’s anything else lurking, I love the satisfaction if solving one of these bad boys.

This is olbg stats/trends picks for the race, I really like this site as they stick strictly to the stats,

    So Beloved – @ 16/1 (Various)

    Professor – @ 25/1 (Corals)

    Big Baz – @ 16/1 (Various)

    Shared Equity – @ 16/1 (various)

So beloved is the only horse that fits every trend of the last 10 winners, the other 3 were 1 or 2 short, surprisingly Russian realm scored low on the table, some food for thought for now but I think it’s safe to assume that O’meara is the way to go, going to have another look.

  14. Alanm 3 years ago

Hopefully Smackeroonies we can get the race between us or at least help those that want a bet to add or dismiss a few.
Good luck 1% total stake on this race only. IMO

  15. Smackeroonies 3 years ago

    I agree

    On looking further

7 of the last 10 winners were drawn between stalls 1 & 13

Positives (2 Points) = Chil The Kite, Outback Traveller, Patentar, Glen Moss, Ninjago, Professor, Jallota, Suzi’s Connoisseur, Baraweez, Big Baz, Redvers, SO BELOVED & Buckstay

After thinking about it the stable jockey Danny tudhope would be pretty miffed if Hughes is coming in and taking his big race winners although I suppose that’s up to the owners but for me I think SO BELOVED is the way to go, however I do concede that R. Hughes is an eye catching booking so I’ll do a small saver on that, also your other choice SHARED EQUITY scores high on the trends list and has to be a player.

    Good luck

  16. Smackeroonies 3 years ago

2 horses being gambled tonight in the Victoria cup…..

    Baraweez and professor

Both now at 20’s from around 28/1

Professor is joint 2nd in the stats table and Baraweez 4th so looks interesting.

  17. Smackeroonies 3 years ago

R Hughes has previously won 3 times on professor so I can’t have that one seeing as he’s on Russian realm, makes sense to me.

Johnb, I remember ages ago, someone asking the question about your selections always matching the selection given by betfair for the given race. I can’t remember if you replied? Reason I mention it today, is all 3 of yours are yet again tipped by betfair in those races. The two favourites, that doesn’t come as a surprise. But Buckstay is the one that gets me. I can’t find it tipped anywhere else at all, other than here and betfair. I’m not suggesting you work for betfair, as I’m quite sure you don’t. But do you read their write ups at all, and use them as any form of guidance? Or is it just a coincidence
I’m on the two favourites in a single and double, and may try Buckstay in each way single also. Best of luck today. You’re long overdue a double. After the first selection won yesterday, I thought yesterday may be the day, especially with Tac being extremely fancied, but weren’t to be

Right here we go not going crazy today as I do not like big cards. I am already on Lulu the Zulu and this is why:

“Lulu The Zulu is reported to have improved again over the winter, according to trainer Michael Appleby, ahead of a race which could be her last start in handicap company.

The seven-year-old proved a model of consistency last year after only finishing out of the frame in three of her 10 races, along with posting wins at Chester and Doncaster.

Appleby said: “Lulu The Zulu has wintered really well and I think she has improved again. I’m quite looking forward to seeing her run.

“We are hoping to try and win some black type with her this season, so we’re looking for a good run on Saturday.

“She doesn’t like it heavy or really quick, but goes on anything in between.

“She has run well at Ascot before, so we know that the track will be fine and she is drawn in the middle, which is not too bad.

“After this, the plan will be look for a mares’ Listed race – either here or abroad.” Source Sportinglife

Some crazy drift with some bookies now going 40-1 yet a couple go 20-1 which is a huge discrepancy. Like I said couple of quid e/w. In the same race I will have a little on Speculative Bid as well 12/1 and worth a punt E/W as well.

16:05 Lingfield I will be on New Providence who is well weighted at 7-2. Will also jump on the Spinatrix banwagon. And the NAP of course. Good luck.

New Providence well beat aswell, that’ll do me.

  120. Ace 3 years ago

was gonna back buckstay but as jb’s other two lost didn’t bother

  121. Luke A 3 years ago

So frustrating, John’s beaten, my first two came second. My other two will probably end with the same result. Yet temptress and speculative bid both appealed to me earlier, and I didn’t bother backing them as I wanted to keep it relatively more “straightforward”. My decision making is so bad at time

  122. Yves 3 years ago

Good return on my James Doyle lucky 31. Three out of five – shame Winter Thunder couldn’t have made it four but I’m happy with what I got.

  123. Nicola 3 years ago

    2nd for Beaverbrook.
Backing Doyle’s last in the 5.55. Fyrecracker 10/1

  124. upswing 3 years ago

i did e/w luke, so no harm done for me… but seems like all the short priced horses are getting turned over.

  125. upswing 3 years ago

form is temporary and class is permanent mate. the road ahead, glastonberry, kilbree kid, my mo ….all great prices…. couple of weeks ago you had the bookies running for cover! lol

  126. Duncan Poundcake 3 years ago

Quinlan / smith are quite the lartnership these days

  134. Rookie 3 years ago

Nice one de niro im glad you calculated your points today! I was worried when i saw you put 11/4 and 5/1 double as being 42/1! Obviously you meant 42/2! Good stuff!

  135. Alanm 3 years ago

Robbo 2 or 3 a day is well plenty either your own or someone else’s tips and no more than 10% of bank or if it’s massive like D/C $ then 5 % is plenty and if you compound it rich rewards will come just fine 2 or 3 great tipster’s with a good sound win rate.

    • Mr Fixit 3 years ago

Clarky, let me save you some time. Johnb keeps the stats – not Scott. The posts are done by Scott not the tips or the stats. Also he’s having a day off so won’t have seen any of your rants.

  139. Luke A 3 years ago

Thanks upswing, you have better memory of my previous selections than me. I do remember when I had that decent spell, that they never tend to last long for me. I personally like picking horses at 5/1 and above, and putting them in each way multiples. That seems to be where I have most joy. However, without the time to look at the cards as much as I’d like, I’m not reading the races quite so well at the moment. Hence why I haven’t been posting selections often at all. Still gutted about speculative bid and temptress. But hey ho, can’t back them all!!
Well done to all with winners today. In particular De Niro. You’ve taken some uncalled for stick at times, taken it on the chin, and continued picking your horses the same way. Credit to you for turning it around.

Cobramint, he never gives up – fair play for persistence. The minute Johnb has a loser he pounces.

  167. double carpet 3 years ago

Have to wonder why henderson has sent FINIANS RAINBOW over to KILLARNEY for his first start back and at the age of 12 has he still got it. On his day hed stroll in but big ask surely. Will be interesting to see how he gets on
