Duncan, what to you fancy in French Derby? it looks wide open.

    • duncanpoundcake 2 years ago

Waiting to see what happens tomorrow in the French 2000 Guineas ,Aiden O Brien has paid the supplement for The Ghurka and Gosden/Dettori in great form . Pretty obvious but ZARAK looked impressive and his trainer said “he is not YET Zarkava” but sounded like he thinks he could be,not a race for a big bet though.
Have you picked anything yourself ?

      • the notorious 2 years ago

I just think The Ghurka might do it. If you give Ryan Moore half a horse he will be bang there, so expect a good run at 5/1

        • Johnb 2 years ago

Both races should go to the French horses of which I am favouring COME ALIVE & ZARAK
although Alice Springs was my 1000 Guineas tip I can’t fancy her tomorrow as I am still confident Minding isn’t as good as she is being made out to be
The Gurkha probably needs to improve a stone just to place and that’s not taking into account the improvement of the French horses

John, what do you see as the biggest danger to Idaho in the derby?

    • Johnb 2 years ago

Probably the weakest Derby I have ever seen,
Still not convinced with Minding but I think O’Brien will run her in the Derby because it’s a weak race.
So Mi Dar could win the Derby but I think connections will stick with the Oaks
      Galileo Gold won’t stay
Don’t fancy US Army Ranger or Wings Of Desire but I can’t rule out HARZAND at a best price 33/1
I think he is more a Ledger horse but it is a weak Derby
      Idaho & Harzand for me

      • Johnb 2 years ago

        Predict text again *Leger*

      • the notorious 2 years ago

John, lets hope So Mi Dar owners stick to the Oaks for my sake.
John, Im of the opinion that Idaho head carriage is not straight forward. Maybe he was getting caught up in the heavy ground at the time, and might improve for better ground.
either way its not easy on the eye to see a horse head cocked high in the air.

      • the notorious 2 years ago

Just backed Harzand at 25/1. cheers john

Last year’s Derby wasn’t the best either, apart from the winner.

For those interested the Iroquois hurdle in Tennessee worth $500,000 was won by little know Irish trainer Matthew Smith and ridden by James Doyle at 13/2. Shaneshill finished 2nd at 13/8 and Nichols Canyon in 3rd 1/1 fave.

Aidan O Briens decison this week to supplement The Gurkha for the French 2000 Guineas is worth taking note of. Third on his debut run in Leopardstown, it was in Navan last month where we saw real potential as he cruised to a nine length victory in a competitive maiden, comfortably seeing off the likes of the likes of one time Derby hopeful Aasheq (a previous second to Derby favorite and O Brien inmate US Army Ranger at the Curragh).
This Galileo colt is clearly going the right way, and with Ryan Moore booked to ride expect this Coolmoore hotpot to be bang there when the whips are drawn.

    • Johnb 2 years ago

I try not to discourage people from certain horses but instead give them my view,
The race The Gurkha won last time can be downgraded as can a lot of heavy ground races, in The Gurkha’s race nothing else really went on the ground which is why the were strung out like they were
Also the form line through Aasheq doesn’t read that well as US Army Ranger isn’t as good as connections thought,
The Gurkha got supplemented for this race because O’Brien now realises his 3yo crop this year are pretty average and The Gurkha being supplemented looks an act of desperation although this does look a pretty weak race on paper as we don’t know just how good ZARAK or ZERZAL are but they do look better than the O’Brien horse and also look to have more improvement in them
Also a statement from Ryan Moore also doesn’t give much confidence for The Gurkha as Moore said he just hopes The Gurkha doesn’t get disgraced

  24. coop192 2 years ago

Have anybody heard of WIN LORDS? If so any good?

  26. the notorious 2 years ago

Great day for punters so far.

  27. Johnb 2 years ago

The Gurkha didn’t get disgraced but it was a weak race

  28. the notorious 2 years ago

Get in the Gurkha!! Took 5/1 last night.
John, the form was in the book. To win as he did in Navan (which has a stiff uphill finish) by 9 lengths in heavy ground. a good horse will win on any ground but the way in which he done it suggests he’s a smooth operator and it will be interesting to see where connections run him next.

    • Johnb 2 years ago

I really can’t see what form is in the book considering a horse that beat The Gurkha was hammered by So Mi Dar in a hands and heals run
None of the time figures suggest The Gurkha is anything more than average including today’s race

      • the notorious 2 years ago

I don’t follow time figures John.
One thing I did consider was that The Gurkha never raced as a two year old suggesting connections and trainer knew they had a horse with potential, so they put him out to grass to develop. It proved a shrewd move as many a good horse has not fulfilled their potential by been over-raced or not given time to develop, leading to injuries.

      • bigpika 2 years ago

that was the gurkha’s first ever run when he was beat. not sure if that makes much difference

    • swany 2 years ago

      Great stuff the nortorious,well done

  29. duncanpoundcake 2 years ago

    Well done The Notorious

  30. 2 years ago

Notorious spot on, very well done!

  31. rale 2 years ago

That was very poor from Gibbons. Best horse by far, but got him boxed. Should have reacted earlier.

    • Johnb 2 years ago

Graham Gibbons at no point in that race could have reacted, at no point in the race did he have anywhere to go,
There was nothing he could have done except sit and hope for a gap, a gap would actually have appeared as one of the horses Infront wanted to drift left but was carried back right by the first two home
Just one of those races that you need luck but don’t get it

      • rale 2 years ago

Appreciate your opinion, but still not convinced. Had the best horse, but relied on luck for gap to open.

  32. duncanpoundcake 2 years ago

Jessie Harrington patent Gambling Girl 6/1,Hint of Frost 10/1 ,Bobabour 16/1 only being offered 23 for the trbl and 35 for the dbls which is pretty much what I already have shysters.
