MILESEY'S Meydan tips have already been posted. Here are his views on Sandown, Wolverhampton and Ayr – including not one but two Lucky15s

SANDOWN 3.15, Imperial Cup

Tanerko Emery has been most progressive since switched to this yard, landing novice at Stratford and handicaps over C&D and Lingfield before excellent third in Welsh Champion Hurdle last month. Likely to improve further.

Mr Mole landed Hereford bumper on debut and won on hurdling bow at Exeter (17f) in October. Made mockery of lenient initial mark when beating Home Run at Taunton last month and 12 lb rise looks fair.

General Miller was a leading novice hurdler in 2009-10. Very lightly raced since, fine second to Overturn in 2m Perth handicap in August 2011 and not knocked about when downfield on return at Ascot last month.

Valdez was a dual-bumper scorer who didn’t take long to do likewise over hurdles this term, landing odds at Huntingdon and Plumpton. Good third under double penalty at Doncaster since and not dismissed.

Claret Cloak was a bumper winner who ended last season with brace of novice wins over 2m. Shaped well when third in listed handicap at Ascot on return and excused below par run on soft ground in Betfair Hurdle since.

Arnaud won 2m maiden at Limerick last term and fifth in Fred Winter at Cheltenham. Back to best when second in minor event at Cork in January, and though found out in Grade 2 next time is still worth a look.

Shammick Boy was a dual hurdles winner in 2011 who was hit and miss over fences last season, but back to best over timber when beating Whitby Jack in 2m Chepstow handicap 2 weeks ago. Should go well again.

Le Bacardy was prolific in France in 2012, winning five times. Claimed for £12,520 in December and better than ever to take 2m Newbury handicap earlier this month. A 12lb rise will make life tougher here, however.

Kazlian looked impressive when bagging brace of wins last term, and better than result when fourth in Fred Winter. Well held in couple of handicaps in the mud this time around but far too soon to write off.

Minella Definitely was an Irish point winner who made winning start over hurdles at Kempton in November and landed 11-runner novice event at Wincanton last month, though given stiff-looking mark here on handicap bow.

Changing The Guard has shown form more in-keeping with his Flat ability in handicap hurdles around 2m this season, winning three times in total. Suspicion handicapper has him about right now, however.

First Avenue was bang in contention when coming down at last in C&D handicap in November. Shaped as if still in good form when sixth at Ascot 6 weeks later, though will remain vulnerable to less-exposed sorts.

Pine Creek had some useful form to his name at up to 1¾m on Flat in France for Andre Fabre and progressive over hurdles this year, scoring in novices at Leicester and Doncaster. Open to more improvement.

First In The Queue returned to very best when runner-up in 2m Ascot handicap in November. Unsuited by conditions last two hurdle starts (third in jumpers’ bumper at Kempton in between), but even so, others preferred.

Stormy Weather was a dual hurdles winner last season who made winning chasing debut at Wetherby (2m) in November. Has regresesd over fences, but new headgear combination and return to timber may re-kindle his spark.

Tominator was a useful stayer on Flat who is progressing over hurdles, taking 17f Bangor novice in October and back on scoreboard in similar event over C&D last month. Type to do well now handicapping in this sphere.

Paintball returned from breathing op with career best to land this event 12 months ago. Hasn’t come close to matching that in five starts since, but return to this venue may bring about a return to form.

Whitby Jack landed 2m Kempton handicap in January. Never looked like justifying support at Ascot next time, but back on track when runner up to Shammick Boy at Chepstow a fortnight ago, so folly to dismiss.

Solaras Exhibition was in form of his life in first half of last year, following up victories over hurdles at Sedgefield and Ffos Las with success on Flat at Chester. Should be better for recent pipe-opener on AW.

Cayman Islands showed marked improvement when opening hurdling account at Musselburgh (2m) in January. Stamina stretched when runner-up over 2½m at that venue next time and unseated early at Towcester since.

Sporting Boy quickly climbed handicap ranks last year, winning 4 times, and there was enough in his sixth-place finish at Wetherby last week to suggest he’ll remain competitive from this sort of mark.

Rockawango won listed hurdle at Auteuil in September and matched that form when second in 2m Ayr handicap on third start for this yard last month, though it’s likely he’ll find a few better treated here.

Barizan was a front-running Grade 1-winning juvenile hurdler in 2010. Attitude took turn for worse after, but took advantage of drop in weights to beat Home Run in 17f Taunton handicap last time.

Verdict: Mr Mole got the better of subsequent Grade 1 winner Melodic Rendezvous earlier this term and merits respect, while it would be no surprise to see Kazlian bounce back to form here, but it’s the useful Flat performer Tominator who gets the vote, racing from a lenient-looking initial hurdles mark. 1. Tominator 2. Mr Mole 3. Kazlian.

LUCKY 15

Sandown 2.05
MANY CLOUDS 11.5

Top weight in this race but form is very solid and should run a good race.

Sandown 2.40
RIGADIN DE BEAUCHENE 3.4

Really should have too much class for this field, even with the higher mark today.

Chepstow 2.30
SYDNEY PAGET 1.26 (nap)

Rated 135, dropping back today into Novice company, if this horse can display the same performance as last time out when finishing second should take this race with ease.

Chepstow 3.40
NICEONEFRANKIE 3.75

On paper there is nothing in this race that should oppose this one today and is the stand-out horse, if he runs to his potential will win.

WOLVERHAMPTON LUCKY 15

2.20: KENNY POWERS 3.25

2.55: GUEST OF HONOUR 4.8

4.0: BROXBOURNE 1.8

5.15: SKYTRAIN 2.7

AYR TIPS PATENT/TRIXIE

Ayr 1.45
SWATOW TYPHOON 2.5

Has run really well on both NH starts for his new yard and going for a hat-trick today will take some stopping. Has won with plenty in hand on both appearances at this course and this step up in trip should cause no problems.

Ayr 2.50
LITTLE GLENSHEE 4.7

On her handicap debut today, going for the hat-trick, is proven on any ground. Which is a good thing for yesterday it changed from being good, to now going to soft with the rain in the past 24 hours. Looking ahead with this one, unlike yesterday with a few of my selections they were selected with the good ground in mind, but the rain soon changed the going at courses across the UK and I got caught out with several of my picks.

Ayr 4.00
SHARIYAN 2.72

Horse is in form and going off a Mark of 130 today for his UK debut and this Irish Raider is going to be tough to beat today.

Rigadin De Beauchene in the Sandown 2:40 at 3.0

This three mile handicap chase is a modest affair and offers a good opportunity for Rigadin De Beauchene to pick up his second race of 2013.

Venetia Williams’ eight-year-old has improved significantly in his second season over fences, winning a Grade Three at Warwick in January, and finishing second in the Grand National Trial at Haydock last month. He obviously stays further than this three miles, but the soft going will be in his favour.

On paper, his main rival appears to be the Paul Nicholls entry There’s No Panic, but he hasn’t been that impressive this season and may be better going left-handed. Soll is dropping back in class and could be a threat, but he had a hard race in the Welsh National and was beaten a long way. Back Rigadin De Beauchene to prevail.

      15.55 Gowran Park – Barneys Honour 5.6
I have to stick with this one today even with the weight rise, the soft ground will favour this horse today. For my top man ” GORDON ELLIOTT “.

His new chase mark of 118 comes into effect today, He has to contend with a full 16lbs rise in the weights here and he will have to improve significantly from Navan to overcome that. Paul Carberry booked to take the ride again. It looks like an extremely competitive race, He ran well here over hurdles in January finishing second of 11 runners behind Rory Anna only beaten 4 ½ lengths, he handles the track, and with soft ground forecast he should have conditions to suit.

      Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting 2013

The bookies’ current ante-post favourite is Bobs Worth, priced at around 4.0 (that’s 3/1 in fractional odds). It’s been heavily tipped my many experts and is sure to go off as pre-race favourite, however it wouldn’t be the first time that the fave has been beaten in the Gold Cup, so what of the alternatives?

Well, Sir Des Champs is also fancied by some, and certainly has the class to beat the field, but can he beat a field of this quality? Silviniaco Conti and last year’s favourite Long Run are next in the betting and could threaten to cause an upset.

The countdown to CHELTENHAM STARTS now and i have a preview to the first days racing.

      Tuesday 13th March 2012

      1.30 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

The William Hill Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is the traditional curtain-raiser to the Cheltenham Festival – and always greeted with a huge roar from the packed stands when the horses trot in for the start.

Run over an extended two miles, it is contested by horses who are likely to return for the Champion Hurdle the following year.

Among the most famous winners in the last few decades are Browne’s Gazette and subsequent Champion Hurdle winners Hors La Loi and Brave Inca.

These are the leading contenders for the 2013 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle:

My Tent Or Yours (trained by Nicky Henderson)

Henderson has decided against supplementing his easy Betfair Hurdle winner for the Champion Hurdle, but must have been tempted so impressive was he at Newbury. The six-year-old looks physically as good as he performs, and will be a warm order to get his high-profile connections off to a Cheltenham Festival flyer.

      Jezki (trained by Jessica Harrington)

In the same ownership as My Tent Or Yours, this five-year-old gives J P McManus an incredibly strong hand in the Festival opener. Unplaced in last year’s Champion Bumper, his only defeat so far, but since then has cleaned up in novice hurdles in his native Ireland and will not mind if the ground dries out.

Un Atout (trained by Willie Mullins)

Mullins, as usual, has a strong team of novice hurdlers but this is undoubtedly his first string in this contest. Unbeaten in three starts, the five-year-old has yet to come off the bridle in landing a bumper and two hurdle races. Could be anything, but has yet to race on ground other than testing.

River Maigue (trained by Nicky Henderson)

An Irish point-to-point winner, he had the speed to land the same Ayr bumper as illustrious stable companion Sprinter Sacre and also scored at Kempton Park on Boxing Day. Turned over by four-year-old Far West at Ascot last time out but is held in high regard at his Seven Barrows yard.

Dodging Bullets (trained by Paul Nicholls)

A useful sort on the Flat when trained in Ireland, the five-year-old was fourth in last season’s Triumph Hurdle and kept his maiden tag in order to have a novice campaign this term. Already a winner twice at Cheltenham in the autumn and not disgraced when third in the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day.

Champagne Fever (trained by Willie Mullins)

Knows where the Cheltenham winning post is for he battled to victory in last season’s Champion Bumper at the Festival. Mixed campaign this time with defeat by Jezki and lacklustre run when returning sick coupled with two easy wins, including a Grade 1. Could be difficult to pass if getting out in front.

2.05 Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Steeple Chase

The Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase is race two of the Cheltenham Festival and the premier test of jumping at speed for novice fencers.

Run over two miles, the race is named after the legendary Irish steeplechaser who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times in the mid-1960s.

Although Arkle himself did not win this event, there is still a highly impressive roll of honour which includes Flyingbolt, Pendil, Alverton, Moscow Flyer, Sizing Europe and Sprinter Sacre.

These are the leading contenders for the 2013 Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase:

      Simonsig (trained by Nicky Henderson)

Henderson won the Arkle last year with the brilliant Sprinter Sacre and he has the outstanding contender again in Simonsig. An easy winner over hurdles at last year’s Cheltenham Festival, the flying grey has tasted defeat only once and all his other races have resulted in spectacular victories.

      Overturn (trained by Donald McCain)

Runner-up in last season’s Champion Hurdle, Overturn has taken extremely well to fences and jumped superbly on all his three starts this term, winning them by a combined total of 68 lengths. A tough front-runner who has also won some big handicaps on the Flat, he could take plenty of pegging back.

Arvika Ligeonniere (trained by Willie Mullins)

Has returned from more than two years off the track to win his three completed races over fences, making all the running each time, before falling on his latest outing at Leopardstown. Should not be underestimated for he has the ability to be involved in the finish if he can put in a clear round this time.

      Benefficient (trained by Tony Martin)

Won the race at Leopardstown in which Arvika Ligeonniere fell as his sound jumping proved decisive, getting the better of smart Oscars Well when that rival also made a bad error at the last fence. Stays further than two miles and that should be an advantage in a race that is usually run at a furious gallop.

      2.40 JLT Specialty Handicap Chase

One of the most competitive races of the Festival, the JLT Speciality Chase is a war of attrition fought out by a huge field of experienced jumpers.
The sort of race that is more than likely to throw up a big priced surprise, a victory here puts the winner in the picture for the Grand National the following month. That was the case in 2007 when Joes Edge landed the Handicap at odds of 50/1 before being sent off favourite for the Aintree showpiece.

Fruity O’Rooney, runner-up in the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase at last year’s Cheltenham Festival, will bid to go one better on March 12.

The 10-year-old, trained by Gary Moore, has been a model of consistency over fences with a string of commendable efforts in big handicaps.

At Cheltenham last year he made most of the running under trainer’s son Jamie Moore only to be collared on the run-in by Alfie Sherrin.

Moore senior has confirmed the same race will be the target again for Fruity O’Rooney, who would not be inconvenienced if the ground came up testing.

On his last two starts, Fruity O’Rooney has been placed both at Sandown and on Cheltenham Trials Day behind Katenko, who has developed into a contender for the Gold Cup.

“He’s been so consistent,” said trainer Moore. “I’m glad I ran him over a shorter trip last time as I was adamant he had the pace for it, but even in heavy ground he was blatantly outpaced.

“He’ll go back to the Festival for the same race he ran in last year. The handicapper has left him alone so he’ll be 1lb lower than when second last year so you’d imagine he’d have a good chance.”

Moore also has Bergo entered for the World Hurdle but fears he is running out of time to get the classy 10-year-old, who has been off the track since the 2011 Doncaster Cup, ready for the race.

      3.20 Stan James Champion Hurdle

The Stan James Champion Hurdle is the highlight on day one of the Cheltenham Festival and always provides a thrilling spectacle featuring the fastest jumpers around.

Run over eight flights of hurdles, usually at a frenetic gallop, the Champion Hurdle has produced some of the most famous names in the history of National Hunt racing.

Hatton’s Grace, Sir Ken, Persian War, See You Then and Istabraq all won it three times while Bula, Comedy of Errors, Night Nurse, Monksfield, Sea Pigeon, Dawn Run and Hardy Eustace also have their places among the pantheon of greats.

These are the leading contenders for the 2013 Champion Hurdle:

Hurricane Fly (trained by Willie Mullins)

The 2011 Champion Hurdle hero was not at his best when defending the title last year and beaten into third place – his only defeat in his last 12 starts. Otherwise he has looked as good as ever at the age of nine and it will need a special performance, or him to be off colour, for him to be beaten this time.

      Zarkandar (trained by Paul Nicholls)

Finished fifth last year when, like Hurricane Fly, he was below par and apart from a fall at Aintree, he has won all his other starts over hurdles. Never looks impressive in his races with a grinding style but has the happy knack of knowing where the winning post is and goes to Cheltenham with solid claims.

Rock On Ruby (trained by Harry Fry)

Sprang a minor surprise by winning the 2012 Champion Hurdle in clear-cut fashion and is now officially trained by Harry Fry, who has taken out his own licence. A tough, consistent eight-year-old, he lacks the brilliance of Hurricane Fly but looks guaranteed to put in his usual honest performance.

      Grandouet (trained by Nicky Henderson)

Brilliant on his day but not the easiest to train, he had to miss last year’s Champion Hurdle and another small setback cost him the chance of a prep race this time. Beaten by Zarkandar at Cheltenham in December but that was his first run for a year and it would be no surprise to see him right in the mix at the final flight.

Binocular (trained by Nicky Henderson) – 14/1

Seems to have been around forever although still only a nine-year-old and enjoyed his Champion Hurdle moment of glory in 2010. May not be quite the force of old but there was promise in his comeback run behind Hurricane Fly at Leopardstown and aims to fare better than last year’s fourth place.

Cinders And Ashes (trained by Donald McCain)

Won last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle so clearly likes Cheltenham and has got stuck in the mud on his two starts this season. Connections will hope the ground dries out before March 12 and if it does, the six-year-old could be a contender to go one better than stable companions Overturn and Peddlers Cross.

Countrywide Flame (trained by John Quinn)

Another to have won at last year’s Cheltenham Festival, this tough sort landed the Triumph Hurdle and kept up the good work by taking the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle in December. Never runs a bad race and his liking for Prestbury Park means he goes back there with a chance of capturing the big one.

      4.00 Glenfarclas Handicap Chase

A different dimension to the Festival, this cross country event is as competitive as anything else on the card. Trainer Edna Bolger has had such a strong grip on the race he has managed to win it four out of the last five times, most recently with Garde Champetre, the 2009 victor.

Trainer Jessica Harrington believes Bostons Angel has “a very good chance” of winning the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase at the 2013 Cheltenham Festival.

The nine-year-old, winner of the 2011 RSA Chase, made a highly encouraging debut over the Cheltenham cross-country course when second to fellow Irish raider Outlaw Pete last month.

It marked a significant return to form for Bostons Angel, who had lost his way over conventional fences but has been sparked back to life by a change of discipline as on his first start over the banks he finished second to Arabella Boy at Punchestown.

“Although he finished second at Cheltenham it felt like a victory for us,” said Harrington, whose charge has yet to visit the winner’s enclosure since the RSA Chase in which he just beat Jessies Dream and Wayward Prince in a driving finish.

“He ran a terrific race, jumped brilliantly and was clearly enthused by the challenge. Unfortunately the ground was very heavy and he just began labouring on the last circuit.

“But he clearly loves it and will be back at Cheltenham in March, where he will stand a very good chance of winning at the Festival for a second time.”

And that may not be the only cross-country target for Bostons Angel as Harrington is also eyeing similar events around Europe

      4.40 Mares’ Hurdle Race

Only introduced onto the card in 2008, the former David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle, now called OLBG Mares’ Hurdle, gives four year old (and above) Mares the chance to battle it out to see who is the Queen of the first day of Cheltenham’s meeting.

Leading Irish trainer WillieMullins has confirmed that Quevega is roaring ahead of her trip to the Cheltenham Festival for the OLBG Mares Hurdle.
The mare will be looking to make it three consecutive victories in the race and it will be the first time the eight-year-old has been seen on the course this season.

Quevega is right on course for her Cheltenham Festival five-timer bid after a gentle workout at Leopardstown racecourse.

Trainer Willie Mullins declared himself “very happy” with the history-seeking nine-year-old, who is attempting to become the first horse since Golden Miller in the 1930s to win the same event at the Cheltenham Festival five times when she lines up for the OLBG David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle.

Quevega galloped with another long-term absentee, Fiveforthree, and two other stablemates.

Mullins said: “We just brought them for a day out really. The intention was to just canter round for one circuit as they will work again during the week. They have been off the course for a long time so we just did it to knock the fizz out of them really. Fiveforthree certainly was fresh.

“I was very happy with them but there was nothing informative. All it told us was that they are alive and kicking.

“Katie Walsh rode Quevega because she rides her at home and Davy Condon rode Fiveforthree. I had been looking at the World Hurdle for him again but I’m considering the Coral Cup also.”

Dessie Hughes also took a few to the organised gallop, although there were far fewer in action than in previous years.

However, Hughes’ big Triumph Hurdle hope Our Conor had a spin along with Posiden Sea (Bumper) and Minsk.

“I was very pleased with all three,” said Hughes. “Posiden Sea won a bumper at Clonmel well and was then second to a nice horse (Outlander) at Leopardstown in December.

“Minsk seemed to really love the better ground and Our Conor was great, I couldn’t be more pleased with him. He looked very strong and came up between horses and seems in good nick.

“Most of the work has now been done with them, it’s just a case of freshening them up now.”

      5.15 Centenary Novices’ Handicap Chase

The Centenary Novices Handicap Chase (5:15pm), formerly known as the Jewson Novices Handicap Chase, is a Class A listed chase run over two miles, four and a half furlongs.

Trainer Gordon Elliott believes Carlito Brigante’s previous experience of Cheltenham will stand him in good stead when he tackles the Pulteney Land Investments Novices’ Handicap Chase at the Festival.

Winner of the Coral Cup in 2011, he also scored over fences at Cheltenham earlier this season and ran well behind Dynaste there in November.

Due to the very wet winter and his preference for good ground, the seven-year-old has been limited to one all-weather start at Dundalk – but Elliott believes he is capable of running a big race.

The highlight of the day is the Imperial Cup, due off at 15:15, and as ever it looks an incredibly tricky puzzle to solve with it being possible to make a case for any number of the contenders. It would come as no surprise were Kazlian to bounce back to form but it may pay to focus on arguably the most unexposed pair, namely Mr Mole and Tominator. The first mentioned made a mockery of his opening handicap mark at Taunton last time and a 12 lb rise for that seems fair but, with slight concerns with regards to that one’s attitude following his somewhat wayward display at Wincanton the time before, we will side with Tominator, who makes his handicap debut over hurdles today. The six-year-old was useful on the Flat, winning the Northumberland Plate and finishing third in the Cesarewitch at his best, and although his jumping wasn’t quite as slick as it could have been in his first two starts in this sphere it was much improved when he cosily got the better of subsequent winner Leviathan over C&D last time. An opening handicap mark of 130 seems lenient when considering both his exploits on the Flat and the potential for improvement that he clearly boasts over timber, and he could well take this event on his way to contesting one of the handicaps at Cheltenham.

      WORTH an E/W PUNT ?
      ——————-

Whitby Jack in the 15:15 at Sandown.

This gelding finished second to Shammick Boy at Chepstow last month. He travelled well throughout the race, but did not find a great deal off the bridle and was worn down over the last. He should have plenty of pace to run at in this competitive event, and could run well at a big price.

At present he is trading at 21.0 on the exchange.

Re Mileseys Ayr tips. I stay in Ayr and it seems to have rained a little (hardly anything) overnight so it shouldn’t have affected the ground too much from yesterday.

      AYR
GOING: SOFT (GoingStick: 8.4) (Both tracks 9yds from innermost line extending race distances by approximately 18 yds per circuit). (Showers)

AYR is soft, so i am right in my picks, your not going to pick horses who love firm/good ground.

Barneys honour out again today mate! U tipped it last week but was non runner! What u think of it’s chances today?

    • Milesey 11 years ago

    SUNDAY HORSE TIPS
    ——————
    10TH MARCH 2013
    —————–

    MARKET RASEN 4.20
    CARA COURT
In such great form at the moment is hard to see past this one in this race today, up in the weights for it’s back to back wins, but hard to oppose today and expect a hat-trick.

    MARKET RASEN 5.20
    THE FOX’S DECREE
Very impressive last time out, and should have alot of confidence after that race, is up in the weights but shouldn’t be a problem.

    WARWICK 4.30
    BOLD ADDITION (NAP)
Was a very impressive winner last time out and if going on from that race today and puts in another performance then will take all the beating.

    WARWICK 5.00
    FREDDIES RETURN
Won a Huntingdon hunters chase last time out, after a lengthy lay off, and came back that day looking very strong, i had my money on that day and witnessed this horse’s very impressive display, i will again be having my money on this one today.

    NAAS 2.10
    ZUZKA
Based on rating this horse is well above everything else in this field, the drop in trip to 2m is a negative for the best run come over 2m4f when winning a grade 3 race.
