Switching saddles! Olympic champ Victoria Pendleton set for debut race as amateur jockey

VICTORIA PENDLETON is famous the world over for her success and dominance in the saddle.

But now, Britain’s most successful female Olympian of all time, is ditching two wheels for four legs.

The double Olympic gold medallist will ride at Newbury on July 2 as she continues her quest to become an amateur jockey.

Pendleton has set the ambitious target of competing at Cheltenham in 2016 with this race coming as a significant milestone in her journey.

The former cycling great will line up in 4 weeks’ time as part of a field of 12 riders to take on the 1 mile, 5 furlong course at Newbury.

She said: “When I partnered with Betfair to switch saddles and become an amateur jockey, I knew it’d be one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced but I’ve already enjoyed so many exciting experiences

“The first time I sat on a race horse and didn’t fall off was a relief, the first time I cantered on the gallops was exhilarating and the first time I jumped in the riding school and schooled over brush fences were hugely satisfying and exciting steps for me.

“And of course starting to ride out with other jockeys at Lawney Hill’s yard was a really proud moment, and gave me a feeling of belonging.

“Although I have to say taking part in this Charity race, back in a competitive environment, will probably top my other experiences on this journey to date.”

Pendleton added: “The last few months haven’t all been plain sailing though, getting initially used to and then learning to jump in a racing saddle was very different and challenging, and I’d be fibbing if I said I haven’t fallen off a few times along the way.

“But right now I’m just focussed on continuing my preparations for Newbury and I just can’t wait to line up there in 4 weeks’ time.”

    • bad jaspers phone 3 years ago

The Lycra lout should stick to cycling and holding up traffic.
The game doesn’t need celebrity people like this getting rides at the expense of jockeys who have scraped around for years trying to make a living.
I take it this circus will go on for a year.
The jockeys below the top echelon of riders would give their right arm for a ride at the festival, and then they see her riding there, must make their blood boil.

Oh well my 2 selections ran well .
Jack and dubai with dubai bringing some money in with the 12s each way.
But don’t horses make fools of us
makes you wonder why we read the form after a result like that.

  86. ConnorMcv7 3 years ago

I’m not saying i picked it but when u look at the form. It’s actually not that shocking. It was rapidly improving and had great speed it just never had the luck or conditions it needed therefore hadn’t really traveled in a big race. U seen there a horse settled and colm judged it perfectly and it rattles home as it always does. I like to upsets like this myself. Although it’s better when u have a big note on it. On to golden horn !

  87. Bertie 3 years ago

50/1 yet again the bookies make a killing if golden horn the short priced favourite wins tomorrow they will be crying about how much it’s cost them but you never hear when they win like today

Subcontinent & Golden Horn 10.92/1 hills

Already advised Golden Horn antipost at 33/1 which is massive now but the more I look at this race the more Golden Horn sticks out and that all his rivals are praying for rain which Golden Horn wouldn’t mind anyway
Golden Horn is by far the best horse in the race and it looks a weak race but that’s only because Golden Horn is so good
people are wondering if he will get the Derby distance and all I will say again is that his sire also produced OUIJA BOARD & SEA THE STARS two of the best horses to run at Epsom in the Oaks & Derby
