Where did you lift those tips from?

  6. Johnb 3 years ago

It’s the 13 year anniversary on Friday as one of the horses I used to have a share in ran in the 2:15 Lingfield on the 8th January 2003
Paul Hanagan was onboard that day, he was backed into 7/2 favourite and won like a favourite should, hitting the front two & a half furlongs out and winning by 4 lengths.
Then we heard the stewards enquiry announcement, but it didn’t really bother me as I couldn’t see anything bad enough to lose the race,
even the bookies agreed as they were offering 1/20 that the horse kept the race, many bookies oncourse decided to pay out on the favourite as it was that clear cut a decision for the stewards to make,
Then the bad news, the stewards decided to place the favourite last and give Hanagan a 6 day ban which meant many betting shop punters had now lost out on a payout including a very sizeable amount I should have collected “my third largest bet I have ever placed”

The decision was appealed and one week later on the 15th we were awarded the win again, that announcement came moments after the horse won again at Lingfield this time by 3 1/2 lengths with Tony Culhane onboard, meaning Altay is the only horse to win 2 races on the same day
He was a good horse for us racing 43 times over the flat, hurdling & chasing
He won 12 times & was placed 11 times winning £101,116

Jockeys like Paul Hanagan, Kieren Fallon, George Duffield, Peter Niven, Robert Winston & Padge Whellan all rode the horse even Fergal Lynch rode him once “before he admitted to cheating”
But the best jockey to ride him was Royston Ffrench.
He would have made a decent chaser and would have run at the Cheltenham Festival but he got injured and retired

The feeling of owning a winner even just a runner can’t be described but it makes me want to get involved again

    • Johnb 3 years ago

This is one reporters story about the horse.

      Uproar over Altay demotion

“Stunned” and “disgusted” were two of the more printable words in the cold winter air at Lingfield Park yesterday after the first controversial stewarding decision of the new year.

Altay, the 7-2 favourite for the 13-furlong Bet Direct Handicap, came home four lengths clear of Lanos, a 25-1 outsider, and the bookmakers were soon paying out. Twenty minutes later, however, Altay was disqualified and placed last and Paul Hanagan, his jockey, was banned for six days for irresponsible riding of a major nature.

Although a stewards’ enquiry had been announced after some bunching on the turn for home, the opinion of most racegoers was reflected down in the betting ring where Barry Dennis was offering 1-20 Altay keeping the race.

Television replays showed that Hanagan had caused minor interference with Waverley Road, on his inside, as he led the field around the final bend. Kent and Haafel, who were just behind Waverley Road, were also squeezed for room. However, it did not appear that Hanagan’s offence was sufficiently serious or premeditated to warrant disqualification.

The stewards thought otherwise. “The rules state that the interference Altay caused to Waverley Road 2 furlongs out and the interference that was then caused to Kent and Haafel in a knock-on effect must be considered separately,” Rachel Tonks, the stipendiary steward, said.

“The stewards ruled that the interference caused to Kent and Haafel was irresponsible riding of a major nature. The stewards were satisfied that Paul Hanagan made a manoeuvre whereby it should have been obvious that interference would occur. I’m sure the public will find it quite difficult to understand how we made the decision, but that is the way we have interpreted the rules and the way they have been said to us,” added Tonks.

Richard Fahey, the trainer of Altay, was not at the track but he said last night that he will lodge an appeal against the stewards’ decision. Hanagan is also expected to appeal against his ban.

The drama came exactly a year to the day since Dispol Evita was controversially thrown out on the same card. That decision was overturned upon appeal to the Jockey Club and Fahey will be hoping that the decision is repeated.

“I’m just stunned. I’ve seen the replay about 10 times now and the more I see it the less I can believe it. I am sure we will have to appeal,” said Fahey.

Even if the stewards’ decision is reversed, however, it will be little consolation for the punters who backed him. The most spectacular losses came on Betfair, the internet betting exchange, where all races can be traded in running.
Almost £20,000 was traded on Altay at odds of 1.01 (or 1-100 in fractional odds), while substantial amounts were also matched at 1.02, 1.03 and 1.05

      • Johnb 3 years ago

And this was the story one week later

Jockey Club seals Altay ‘double’ at Lingfield

SCOTTISH-owned horse Altay ensured his place in racing history yesterday when he “won” two races on the same day – one on the racecourse and the other at the London headquarters of the Jockey Club.

The six-year-old, who was the subject of an outcry at Lingfield last week when he was disqualified and placed last by stewards after coming home four lengths clear in the Bet Direct Live Football Cashbacks Handicap.

Most spectators believed the 7-2 favourite had been harshly punished for interference of a minor nature, which also landed Altay’s jockey Paul Hanagan a six-day suspension.

But trainer Richard Fahey appealed against the ruling and yesterday succeeded in having his gelding reinstated as the winner, although Hanagan’s ban will stand. Punters will not be paid out on Altay either, as the result was finalised for betting purposes at the weigh-in immediately after the race.

The Jockey Club’s decision came hours after Altay had made a happy return to Lingfield, winning the Showcase Handicap by three-and-a-half lengths for replacement rider Tony Culhane.

Well done to everyone over last few days who have posted winners. Glad your back alanm and you’ve found your touch again. Reading your post on owning a horse there’s a thought the fixit syndicate. That would be fun.

  10. buckiejag 3 years ago

Johnb, Nice to hear the story from the horses mouth. Was tohat before the bookies were taking bets online? While you were owning horses was it the training fees could be expensive and the buying the horses?

  11. buckiejag 3 years ago

Should read above, was it the training fees that were expensive and not the buying of the horses.

    • Johnb 3 years ago

Can’t remember when online betting started but they did have phone accounts then.

The training fees are roughly £16,000 a year but some trainers are more,
Horses to buy probably £10,000 to £20,000 for a decent one but Altay wasn’t bought as some of the owners owned the mare Aliuska and bred from her

      • Johnb 3 years ago

There are some horses that are a bargain at less than £10,000 though

  12. gengar 3 years ago

saw syndicate ging on anthoer site for 2.5% ownership isnt that expensive but training fees were 130 a month to much for a porper like me lol

    • Johnb 3 years ago

gengar if that’s only one horse then that’s extortionate £130 a month for a 1/40 share
Ours was £125 a month for a 1/12 share but the horse ended up paying for itself

      • gengar 3 years ago

yeah i only seen it on site i could never afford to do that anyhow as i would liek to be able to travel to least see the horse but that is what it was going from somthing grumble it was called

  13. Johnb 3 years ago

For anyone that’s not seen it there is a film from last year called Dark Horse,

It’s a true story about Dream Alliance and how a woman called Jan Vokes from a small Welsh village bred the horse and kept him on her allotment till he was sent to Phillip Hobbs yard,
It cost the locals £10 a week and the horse went on to win the 2009 Welsh National

AN Irish-trained racehorse has helped a 34-year-old man from Southampton land a massive £245,000 win off a £30 bet.

Mr Boss Man, an eight-year-old charge of Dublin-based trainer Adrian McGuinness, was one of seven winners on Wednesday’s card at Wolverhampton.

The mystery punter, who is a mechanic, wishes to remain anonymous after picking all seven winners in an accumulator bet.

Married with three children, he is planning on buying his first house with the winnings.

“I chose the horses based on their names,” he told William Hill, with whom he placed his bet online.

“I looked at ones who were favourites and selected them at random based upon names that I liked. I was watching the results come in and after the first three had won, I started texting the wife. When the seventh had won, I was jumping around the place. It’s the biggest high I have ever had.”

Despite the life-changing amount of money, he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

He added: “I’ll be working this weekend and I don’t plan on telling many people, else they’ll all be wanting discounts!”

    12.50 Wolverhampton – Whitecliff Park (odds 5/4)

    1.20 Wolverhampton – Artful Mind (odds 9/2)

1.50 Wolverhampton – Mr Boss Man (odds 7/4)

    2.20 Wolverhampton – Oakley Girl (odds 4/1)

    2.50 Wolverhampton – Perfect Cracker (odds 5/1)

3.20 Wolverhampton – Bank Of Gibraltar (odds 7/2)

    3.50 Wolverhampton – Ohsosecret (odds 11/4)

The exact details of the bet were a £10 each-way accumulator on the seven horses and a further £10 win accumulator on the same seven horses, totalling £30 in stakes

The punter took the early prices the night before, which nearly trebled his winnings

Still 100% this year for my double stake joint NAP/NB’s with 3 out of 3

I am away from home just now so can only watch on my phone, small screen but my impression of Lovely Job is there might have been a tack problem about 3 fences out as the jockey looked to be struggling to keep his balance over the last 3 fences, I can’t be certain though but if that was the case then the jockey has done a remarkable job, he also fell off after the line
