We should have definitely walked away with one winner on Tuesday.
Danny Tudhope did his best Paul Mulrennan impression on Obito. I understand the horse didn't break the quickest, but what was he thinking when going ten horses wide to get a run? Really does baffle me how they solve stuff like that.
Loving Apprentice ran well, and if you went against me and backed him each-way, you'd have made a small profit. I fancied going on the nose with this selection, but I did think he ran well. The small field split into two groups, which is always annoying, as you never know if your horse was on the correct side of the track or not. If his mark remains unchanged, and they get soft ground again, I'll be more than happy to back him once more.
Life Is Beautiful 7/2 (1pt) – Yarmouth 4.00
At first, I was tempted by Karl Burke's four-year-old runner in this contest. That filly is a full sister to Convergent, who was a winning selection for us on the weekend in Ireland. That horse clearly liked the soft ground, so I thought the rain at Yarmouth would be in her favour. She also finished fourth in this race last year at odds of 50/1, but with Clifford Lee not making the trip to Yarmouth, that was enough to put me off.
Running Lion would have been of interest if she were in better form than what she has shown for the majority of her season so far. There are others in the race who deserve to be mentioned, but with the three-year-old horses having such a good record in this race in recent years, Life Is Beautiful stood out as the main horse.
On first glance, her form isn't fantastic, but when you actually look through it closely, she has some very solid form. She was second to Falakeyah earlier in the season. Despite that horse not showing her true ability last time out, I am confident she is a Group 1 horse. The form of the horses behind has worked out well. The third and fourth are now Class 1 winners. Earlier in the season, Life Is Beautiful was behind Kon Tiki, another horse that has gone on to win a Class 1 race.
Life Is Beautiful ran over 12f at Ascot on fast ground, which doesn't look like her ideal conditions based on her pedigree. She bounced back to form with a much better effort in France last time out, finishing in second spot. I think this race isn't too strong, and I think she'll like the soft ground, being by Night Of Thunder.
John & Thady Gosden have a great record at Yarmouth, with a 23% SR since Thady was added to the training licence. That has yielded a +8.57 profit to £1 level stakes. That might not sound great, but the yard ships out many short-priced favourites, so seeing a profit is always a positive.
