Monday didn't go as planned or as hoped. We walked away with no wins, two poor efforts, and one unlucky runner-up who lost in a head bob.
The Edward Bethell newcomer was well backed in the market, but was far too keen to do himself justice. He showed enough to think he will win races soon, but that didn't do me any favours, but that is the risks attached when backing newcomers.
Twisting Physics had to shoulder 10st 8lbs, which is fairly unheard of on the flat, and it was too much for him. He was under pressure a few furlongs before the finishing line, but he kept plugging away, but the weight difference of 18lbs was too much.
High Degree 9/4 (1pt) – Nottingham 3.32
Every horse bar High Degree has had a run in this race, but I am going for the newcomer, which sounds controversial given my statement above and backing horses without experience, but I have my reasons.
I tipped up a William Haggas newcomer the last week or so, and he was a winner, and I backed that horse on the strong pedigree, but also that William Haggas is known for unleashing some useful debutantes throughout the year. I think this horse could be another decent prospect for the Haggas stable, and he should be able to win this race if he is half decent.
He is another Too Darn Hot colt, like Scoville, who was the winning debutante at Windsor at the start of May. High Degree is out of a mare who has produced a top-quality horse from America, Technical Analysis. His sibling from America was a Group 2 winner and recorded a peak RPR of 118, with her best form on firm ground.
Hymnbook and King's Charter will be tough to beat with the experience advantage they have and the decent level of form they've produced, but the Godolphin horse hasn't been on the track in over 200 days, and Hymnbook doesn't have the greatest of pedigrees.
