The Saturday Lucky 15 was a solid enough bet with two placed horses and a 14/1 winner.
If you did follow the selections with an each-way Lucky 15, you would have profited just over 2x your stake. (50p EW Lucky 15 returned £40.27)
This bet is advised as a straight win Lucky 15.
Knebworth 4/1 – Goodwood 1.50
I can't remember if I put up Knebworth when he won at Newbury last year on bottomless ground, or if I backed him without tipping. Either way, this horse is best on ground that is bottomless. Thankfully, today he will get those ground conditions, and for that reason he holds a strong chance.
He won off a 1lb higher mark in a competitive Class 3 race at Newbury, which gives him every chance of finding his way back in the winner's enclosure.
Stellar Sunrise 7/4 – Goodwood 2.25
Backing horses in juvenile novice/maiden races is a bit of a lottery as you don't know what the unraced horses are going to show. But, generally, horses with the experience edge are worth their weight in gold.
Stellar Sunrise looks like the best horse that we know about in this race. He was second on his first start at today's venue, which was worthy of a RPR of 79. With further to come today, he could be too good and know too much for the others.
He is by Space Blues, who had his career best performance on soft ground in France, and his sole runner as a sire on soft ground has yielded a win.
Waardah 7/1 – Goodwood 3.35
I was tempted to go back in on Miss Tonnerre, as I tipped her up last time out when she was strongly fancied at York. Even though I think she is more than capable of winning this race, I think there is a strong possibility that some of the other unexposed horses are more tempting.
I've decided to give a chance to Waardah, who should relish today's soft ground. She has already proven to be effective on slow ground when winning on her debut last year, and then finishing a decent fifth in a Listed race. Her comeback run at Southwell was okay, but Owen Burrow's horses look to be in need of their first run this year. With the fitness run behind her, she should be firing on all cylinders and ready for another crack at Listed honours.
Waardah will have to improve to win this, which is obvious from her official rating of 88, but it can definitely happen. She is by Postponed, who improved with experience and age.
Military Academy 9/2 – Goodwood 4.45
It could be extremely foolish to go against the soft ground legend that is Hamish, but I'm going to do it anyway.
I have always had a soft spot for Military Academy since I watched his debut run. I've believed that this horse is a Class 1 horse, and now is the time to prove it against a couple of solid horses.
He is definitely best on soft ground, as we saw on debut and at Salisbury. He couldn't live with Burdett Road at Newmarket, but he was miles off the pace that day and that made it a difficult task. Since then, he has won a Listed race on the AW in easy fashion.
This year, he has finished second in a Group 3 and was very ordinary in Bahrain, so there are questions to be asked. Other than the favourite and maybe the second fav, this race isn't the strongest.
