Well, I hope you all had a nice Christmas and enjoyed the racing on Boxing Day. Hopefully, you picked out more winners than I did, which saw me get the one winner which meant we were even on the day.
Chepstow 2:50 – Only The Bold 33/1 (0.5pt EW, Whill 6pl)
It's the Welsh Grand National, and this race is normally get a great betting race as it's wide open and often get decent odds on the majority of the runners. I've been liking Autonomous Cloud for a few weeks for this race since he beat by horse at Uttoxeter, who was a faller and Paddy Brennan was singing the praises of the horse and that he'll be going straight for this race, but he's shortened a lot in the market and at the prices, I think it's best off going for another horse as 11/2 or around that for a horse who has to prove his stamina is mighty short.
My dart for the Welsh National landed on Only The Bold who is trained by David Pipe and ridden by the Welsh wizard, Jack Tudor. On recent form over hurdles you'd say he's got no chance of winning this or getting close with a PU and 8 next to his form line, and a fourth over fences the time before that, but hear me out. He was 2/2 over fences since moving to David's yard from Evan Williams, he made mincemeat of two handicaps at Bangor and then Hereford, he was then dropped to 2m 4f at Haydock, which was never going to suit as he is a strong stayer, so the 4th placed effort can be forgiven. For the start of this campaign, he's been running over hurdles, which is not for him as his one win from 10 efforts would suggest, and to me, it looks like they were getting prep/fitness runs into him for the specific race today, that way his handicap mark wouldn't have been altered over fences, as they must feel he's on a good mark.
Now he's back over fences and is running over a trip which should suit on ground which should become testing with Chepstow expecting a decent amount of rain in the morning of race day, which is another positive for this lad's chance.

Elixir de nutz is fancied for the better desert orchid race at 2-30 today at this meeting.
Should be hard to beat as this is an easier race than that one.

Won this by 13 lengths last year beating the re opposing nube negra (Edwardstone fell but he’s not here today).
Followed up at the Clarence house chase at Cheltenham in January beating edwardstone and energumene which is top notch form.

Truckers lodge finished in top 7 in this race 4 times before.
A good day yesterday with 6/4, 2/1 winners plus Hewick at 14s and Es Perfecto making the frame.
I’m sticking to home soil today as I’ve not had time to look elsewhere

12.05 is a no bet race but current fav Lark in the Mornin was beaten by Mighty Bandit on debut and he didn’t do much yesterday to Frank the form. He’s also supposedly Elliotts number 1 juvenile so based on that I’d say Willie is quietly confident of winning this with Ethical Diamond who was purchased for 320g after winning on the flat.
12.35 again a no bet race but we see the return of Supreme winner Marine Nationale and after what Facile Vega did yesterday the door has been well and truly opened wide for him to stamp his authority on the arkle market.
1.10 Captain Guineas 5/4
I’m not overly confident on him winning as up to now he’s always found 1 too good at the highest level. However he was really good lto and if adopting the same tactics today will be hard to beat.
1.45 Future Champions Novice Hurdle
Fascinating race for a few reasons.
I was really impressed with Daddy Long Legs maiden win. He left a good field for dead to win by 13L. His jumping was slick and his turn of foot at the finish was a real eye catcher.
He was given an RPR of 131 for that win compared with Down Memory Lanes RPR of 116 for his win even though DML did it with ease and comes with a high reputation he’ll have his work cut out to finish ahead of DDL imo.
Another runner worth keeping in the notebooks is Predators Gold who easily dispatched Mossy Fen Park (who won the opener at Down Royal yesterday) on his first start over hurdles but rather than step up in trip (had him shortlisted for the AB) He’s been dropped back in trip for this. Could end up being a plot for a Martin Pipe come March, but either way definitely one to follow especially with it being a Giggenstown horse in a Mullins yard !!
3.00 Paddy Power Gold Cup
I’m on 2 here, last year’s 3rd Panda Boy at 13/2 ew 6 places. This is his main target for the season. Bookies well aware hence current fav.
The other is Busselton at 28/1 ew 6 places who has a very good record over the 3m trip but has been running over inadequate trips since finishing 5th in the Coral gold Cup at Newbury last year off 149. 3lbs lower today has an ew shout at big odds.
