Nice to get a 13/2 winner yesterday in the form of Dereham, who was given a beautiful ride by Megan Nicholls. She schooled a lot of the seasoned professionals at Pontefract yesterday. She took her time on the selection when others shot their load around the bend, took the horse wide and he powered up the hill.

Not normally a betting race for me, and 2yo races in general aren't what I like, but I thought it was interesting that Kevin Ryan unleashes a debutante at Newmarket. Considering Kevin is a Yorkshire based trainer you'd have thought there would be plenty of chances to give him a debut at a smaller track where he would face less of an oposition, but he hasn't and he's come to the HQ of flat racing at Newmarket. The fact he has done that suggests this horse could be well above average and an early 2yo. With races like this where they are all unraced you can only go off things like pedigree, and this horse's pedigree stands out for an ideal candidate for an early 2yo race. He is related to Kevin Ryan's Boonie, who was an above average juvenile last year, winning on debut before going on to finishing 3rd at Royal Ascot and then 3rd in a Group 3 at Glorious Goodwood. I'm hoping that FLYING BARTY will make a flying start to his career in the first race at Newmarket.

OSTILIO isn't a horse you'd have great faith in when backing him, but it's clear as day that on his day he has talent. This horse has swapped yards a fair few times in recent years, in the last 12 months he has been at Paul Midgley's, Archie Watson's and has now found himself at Phil McEntee. He has had a few runs under Phil, all coming on the all weather, and they haven't been without a little promise. He has dropped to a mark of 87 which makes him very well handicapped on old form, but also he has won at this track before which is a huge plus in my eyes, as not all horses take to the undulations of the Rowley Mile. Silvestre De Sousa is an eye-catching jockey booking for this yard, and his stats suggest that with four places being available, he is worth a try in this despite being the biggest outsider. SDS has won 7x for McEntee from 59 rides, which has yielded a further 26 runs in the top 4, meaning 33 out of the 59 rides has resulted in a win or top 4 finish. This jockey booking suggests they are expecting a better run this time around, and I think he is worth a small EW play.

In a selling race, most of the horses will arrive in terrible form, but that's not the case for ALASKAN JEWEL. This filly has been in good form over the winter months, winning once and finishing 3rd the time after. I think you can ignore her run at Southwell where she probably didn't handle the surface, and the extra 1f she had to race over wouldn't have helped either. She went off at odds of 18/1 that day which also suggests they weren't confident of a big run that day. Wolverhampton seems to bring the best out of her, she finished 3rd back in September over C&D, before defying a 132 day break in January where she won quite nicely in the end after starting slow and given plenty to do. She runs off bottom weight of 8st 5lbs when you take Joanna Mason's 3lb into consideration, which gives her a big chance in this. Joanna Mason and trainer Adrian Paul Keatley teamed up together last week to win on a 33/1 shot. She is available at an EW price currently (around 11/2) so I'll be doing her EW due to the potential slow start which she seems to have a habbit of, as well as my recent seconditis over the past month or so.

There is a strong possibility that I am losing my marbles by putting up CASTING VOTE in this race. This horse is very out of form and has shown very little for a long time, but I think this race could be set up nicely for him to get an easy lead of things. On his day he does have the ability to get competitive in this, but as his odds would suggest, he has to turn it around. Christian Williams isn't known for his flat exploits, shown by his 0 wins from 17 runners in this code over the last five years, but he is still a quality trainer and has seen this horse to best effect when he sent him to Chester where he finished 3rd/10. That was over 14f that day, but since then he has been kept to 9.5f. The runs over shorter give the impression they were used to strip him fitter, those claims are more evident with the fact he ran him twice over a 14 day period. They've upped him in trip again, only to 12f, but that should suit him. Joe Fanning is an interesting jockey booking, as he is a jockey who is one of the best front running lads in the weighing room, especially on the all weather. There is a serious lack of pace in this, so it wouldn't surprise me to see Joe take the initiative and try not see another horse. If that's the case and the rest of them let him crack on, which I think they might as they won't respect his chances, he could be hard to collar back. It's a shame it's a small field race which means only 2 places available. I will be playing him EW despite that. You can use enhanced placements, but you don't get B.O.G and you get a shorter price, so if that's your bag, then go ahead and crack on.

Won fto last season over C&D off a 4lb higher mark.
First run for new stable and whilst a swith of stables can go either way, I’m hoping it can prove to be a good call.
At Newmarket
BELL ROCK 3.00 has won fto at the track for the past 3 years so obviously this is the time to catch him. Just the 7 runners so a modest win bet.
