Sir Lowry's Pass did what he did at Goodwood last time out by coming off the bridle quite early, but he didn't manage to stay on as powerfully as he did when winning, finishing a couple of lengths behind the two who fought out a photo finish.
Max The Tiger 18/1 (0.5pt EW, Skybet/WilliamHill) – Redcar 2.50
The early market weakness would put off people from backing Max The Tiger, especially from a yard like Iain Jardine's, but I don't think there is too much to read into that, and the main money movements come in the morning and just before the off, so I am more than happy to take big prices on Max The Tiger the night before.
It's not a surprise to see the Sir Mark Prescott horse fancied at the top of the market, and he will probably go off as an odds-on favourite due to him being trained by the handicap master, but he doesn't look to be miles ahead of his mark, even with the step up in trip likely to suit him.
Captain Brett is another southern raider, but David Simcock doesn't do too well at Redcar, and this horse looks a quirky ride, so it'll be a big test for young Warren Fentiman to get control of this horse. Not only that, but this horse has been campaigned solely on the AW apart from one run, so it does make you think that he prefers that surface.
I landed on Max The Tiger as he is also trying this trip for the first time, and he was staying on strongly last time out when finishing behind another Sir Mark Prescott horse who has franked the form despite not winning again. He was big odds when he finished as runner-up, so it goes to show that a lack of market support for him doesn't mean he is going to run a stinker.
This is obviously a low-tier race, and my selection is running off a mark of 48, 2lbs out of the handicap. However, his run last time out signalled that he can definitely win races like this. Now tackling a more suitable trip, he is far too big in the market to ignore, and even with two places, he is a solid each-way angle.
