I had some free time this evening and offered to cover the racing tonight. Rizz opted to swerve the Lucky 15 thread on Sunday due to the lack of meetings and nothing really standing out, and that was a more than fair observation from him.
There is more than enough racing on Monday to get tucked into, so I’ve offered to throw up a Lucky 15 thread to cover for yesterday’s absence. Hopefully, we can find a few winners along the way and put together a decent set of selections for everyone to consider.
Rizz only had the one selection on Sunday in the shape of Point Lynas. Rizz rolled the dice with Point Lynas in the hope that he could turn over the odds-on favourite, Holloway Boy.
His selection ran well in defeat, leading a furlong from home, but the eventual winner was always doing enough to get up towards the line and win by three-quarters of a length. It was a solid enough run from Point Lynas, who gave his supporters a good run for their money, but unfortunately, he couldn’t quite get the better of the favourite.
Humphrey 11/8 – Southwell 3.00
I second-guessed backing this horse on multiple occasions, as I think, on paper, this is quite a competitive race, which I’m sure will throw up some next-time-out winners.
All that aside, I finally opted to go with my gut and side with the Gosden-trained Humphrey. It’s a pity I’ve missed out on the opening price of 9/4, as the money has already come for my selection, who is now a strong 11/8 favourite against this field.
My selection let favourite backers down on debut. The money hammered in for him beforehand, as he was sent off an odds-on favourite at Sandown two weeks ago. He was quite green throughout the race, and breaking slowly certainly didn’t help his chances. However, the penny did eventually drop late on, and he rallied quite well down the straight to finish third behind the now 85-rated Turty Tree.
That debut run should have been a valuable learning experience for Humphrey, and I expect him to come on bundles for it. He has already shown enough ability to suggest that he is capable of winning a race of this nature, and with the benefit of that first run under his belt, I’m hoping we see a much more professional performance this time around.
Humphrey should come on significantly for the experience, and if he can settle better and break on terms from a handy stall, I think he has a very good chance of getting off the mark for the Gosdens at the second attempt.
At 11/8, the price isn’t quite as appealing as the 9/4 that was available initially, but I’m still happy to take the chance that Humphrey can justify favouritism. He looks the one with the most potential to improve from his debut, and if he takes that expected step forward, I think he can go one better at Southwell.
