Cairnzy's selection was ridden cold towards the rear, made up some ground, but didn’t look like he stayed the trip.
Cairnzy had time free on Sunday and reached out to cover Monday's card. I will return tomorrow evening with my selections for Tuesday's racing.
Gorepoint SP – Stratford 3.10
Please note that this analysis was completed early in the day before any betting odds were released.
I would expect the Emma Lavelle-trained A Little Something to head the market when prices become available. While the favourite is unlikely to be drastically short, the odds may be short enough for me to look elsewhere.
The horse that caught my eye was the Anthony Honeyball-trained Gorepoint, who is set to be partnered by Sam Twiston-Davies.
Gorepoint is a reliable performer and has finished in the frame on each of his last four starts over fences. He was comfortably beaten by A Little Something when the pair met at Fontwell last time, going down by 12 lengths, but there are reasons to believe he can close that gap.
That run came on Gorepoint’s seasonal reappearance, and he never jumped with his usual fluency throughout the contest. With that outing now under his belt, he is entitled to improve significantly and should strip much fitter here.
The handicap also offers encouragement. A Little Something has been hit with an 11lb rise for that recent success, while Gorepoint benefits from a much more favourable position at the weights this time around.
With expected improvement from his comeback run and a significant swing in the weights, Gorepoint looks capable of putting up a much stronger challenge.
Camelot Champion SP ( Win ) 3-5 SFC – Pontefract 3.00
Again, I have no odds at my disposal for this contest. With only five runners going to post, 3 making their debut, and two having their second career start, I don’t exactly have much to go on.
Those with experience didn’t exactly set a high standard, particularly Knight Of Storms, who brings the worst form to the table. Trainer Charlie Johnson runs two, one of which is my selection, and the other is See The Sun. Sea The Sun was the other horse with racing experience, having finished second on debut at Ripon in a class 4. The RPR recorded by Sea The Sun wasn’t amazing, which made me believe this could go to a newcomer.
My eyes were drawn immediately to Camelot Champion, who isn’t the worst-bred horse I’ve seen, being by Camelot and related to Luxembourg, who was most recently trained by Aiden O’Brien and went on to achieve an RPR of 124, winning multiple Group races at a high level. I’m hoping we can get around 13/8 for my selection when the betting opens, but I wouldn’t be getting involved if anything under even money.
I’ve opted to have two bets in this race as I think this race will be fought out between the two Charlie Johnson-trained horses. Camelot Champion 1st and Sea The Sun 2nd SFC is my side bet in this race.
