Yesterday saw two nice enough priced runners place, but it was yet again another case of history repeating itself. I don't mention too many runners that aren't the selection but the strike rate of those I do, is probably unmatched. Two I gave mentions to yesterday both won at big prices, it's pleasing to be aware of them but not quite good enough.
It's a new week and once again I will be away, last week my AirBnb wifi had all gambling sites restricted which really affected my selections, hopefully it isn't the case this week.
Attacanter Racing Tips
Three Platoon 8/1 five places – 13.45 Thirsk
You won't find many tipsters dipping their toes into this contest but I am a sucker for an extra place in a race impossible to decipher.
I have flip flopped a good few times once again, but it seems if I mention a horse without selecting it, it wins, a reoccuring theme which happened against yesterday, twice. As such I'll avoid speaking it into existence and focus on my selection.
Rebecca Menzies is a trainer I've liked for a good few years, a small operation who does plenty. She has had 3 winners from 6 runners at Thirsk this season and although the yard wasn't firing on all cylinders at this time last year, she did end the month well with a winner and 4 places from 7 runners.
With most runners having plenty of questions to answer, I was happy enough with what I saw from Three Platoon recently at Beverley. The horse was dropped out the back before travelling into things nicely, last off the bridle, he was never really given a chance to win but looked like another try at this trip was well worth a go staying on into 3rd. We carried 9lbs more than the 2nd, finishing just a head behind, that horse won its next two and is in this 15lbs worse off.
The horse now gets the assistance of a 5lbs claim which puts it on 48, he's placed a couple of times this season off 9lbs higher and that reads well enough in a field full of uninspiring types.
Calafrio 6/1 four places – 15.50 Thirsk
This horse won off 50 over C&D just a month ago, finishing 3.5 lengths in front of a previous winner, today's apprentice was on board but unable to claim, he totally bombed at Goodwood but now returned here off effectively the exact same mark, I think he has to be chanced.
This does look like a deeper contest but the horse does his best work at this track, besides his recent win he finished 2nd twice this summer, beating 25 of his 27 rivals. Plenty of the horses he has beat have gone on and won since, he carried 7lbs less when half a length behind Eternal Sunshine which reads very well, that horse has raced 5 times since, 3 wins and 2 2nds.
All being well, this horse should be bang in contention at the business end of the race and as expressed, his place claims are rock solid.
Monks Mead 6/1 four places – 16.45 Windsor
A chance is taking on the very consistent Monks Mead from the small Mark Usher operation. The horse hasn't won for approaching a year but has finished in the places on 4 of his previous 6 runs, and most of those were without the 7lb apprentice who is on today.
The trainer only had two winners over September/October last year but that doesn't really concern me giving how well treated the horse is in terms of place claims. Back on his last winning mark, what the horse will be racing off of 56, he's placed off higher marks in 3 of his previous 4 runs, he's 7lbs below last time and off of that, in a big field, a chance is taken he can put in another good performance.
The apprentice rode for Mark 25 times over the last 12 months, placing enough and bagging 3 wins – which is decent enough.
My Gift To You 6/1 four places – 17.00 Worcester
This is a rather tentative selection given my attention has been mainly on the flat for quite a good while. James Owen is an impressive dual purpose trainer – I am not sure of his background but he has been on the radar for a good couple of seasons now. He has a good record and uses Sean Bowen quite effectively.
The horse is extremely high in the weights so will need to improve, he was raised 5lbs for a close up 2nd to a horse raised 7lbs before winning again, and then finishing 2nd up in class. He is 17lbs above his best chase win and 19lbs above his best hurdle win, that doesn't inspire me but he's only been out of the top 3 once in 10 runs. He has ran well here recently and the form looks good enough to chance.
No rivals have been assessed unfortunately, place claims may be all we can hope for but I expect him to carry on his good form since being upped in trip and a return to hurdles may be a shrewed move.
September profit/loss stands at ???
Aaah this is where I posted it, lol.
