Golf: French Open Tips

LE GOLF NATIONAL in Paris plays host to the 100th French Open and the 2018 Ryder Cup venue has attracted a stellar cast.

In recognition of the centenary the tournament will count as two events played in the Race To Dubai and there are enhanced points towards the Ryder Cup World Points List and the European Points List. Also those not already exempt and finish in the top 12 will get automatic entry into The Open at Royal Troon in a few weeks.

Greens in regulation and scrambling look to be important and while Rafael Cabrera Bello has had a really good year he hasn’t been able to get that elusive win. He hasn’t won on Tour since the Dubai Desert Classic in 2012 but this could be it. His stat for GIR is 73.7% (17th) and scrambling stands at 54.7% (85th) but it’s his form that impresses me.

Another who is having a good season that includes a T18 at the US Open is Gregory Bourdy. He has not finished outside the top 20 in his last four tournaments and he will be up for this on home soil. He’s another who hasn’t won for a few years (2013) but home soil could be the push he needs to get that win. He is 17th in GIR stats (73.7%) and 85th in scrambling (54.7%).

Andy Sullivan had a great year last year with three wins but he’s only managed one top 10 this year. The 29-year-old was a T23 in the US Open and T21 in the BMW last week so he’s going in the right direction. Wouldn’t surprise me if he does well this week. His GIR stat is 69.4 (49th) and scrambling 57.8 (48th).
