WELL we got close last week with a third (Justin Rose) and fifth (Ian Poulter) after some great golf action, especially from shock winner Victor Dubuisson, so let’s see if we can hit the jackpot this week.
A couple of months ago I thought Rose and Henrik Stenson would fight it out in Dubai but I’m not so sure now with Stenson still carrying that wrist injury. He used to live there and knows the Jumeirah Golf Estates Earth Course like the back of his hand but I just have reservations about him.
Rose on the other hand has come good at the right time. Last year he finished this tournament with a 62 and I really fancy him to win this weekend. And although he seems to be a low-priced favourite I’ll still back him to finish top of the pile.
I’m also going for Poulter as he is in such great form at the moment and is desperate to be Europe’s No.1. As we saw at Medinah in the Ryder Cup when he’s pumped up it’s like he’s on another planet and he’s definitely up for this.
One I looked at last week was Jamie Donaldson who had finished eighth two weeks ago. He had a second last week with a great final round of 63. Can he go one better this week is another question but think he is worth an each-way bet.
I backed Paul Casey when he won the Irish Open in June and followed him a few times since with not too much success. He finished eighth in the BMW Masters behind Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and is fifth in greens in regulation list. He’s got the game for Dubai and look for a good showing from the Englishman.
I’ve always like Fernandez-Castano but he’s had a very up and down season. He did win the BMW Masters in Shanghai last month and is worth a chance.
