GOLF: ALFRED DUNHILL LINKS TIPS

WHAT a weekend that was! Great result for Europe and some brilliant golf. Unfortunately my selections were hopeless and as Mr Fixit said I should just stick to strokeplay.

So we're back to “normal” golf at the Alfred Dunhill that's played over St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarn this week.

I say “normal” but it’s not really as the golfers will be playing alongside celebrities, family or friends and you wonder how seriously they will take it.

Four of the victorious Ryder cup winning team are taking part, Rory McIlroy, MArtin Kaymer, Victor Dubuisson and Stephen Gallacher, so they are assured of a great reception. I don’t think any of them will be challenging this week after their exploits (and the partying) over the weekend.

For this competition over three courses I’m going for guys who have done the business for me in the past. Winner of the ISPA Handa Wales Open two weeks ago, Joos Luiten has been in a rich vein of form over the past four weeks.

Before winning in Wales he finished T4 in Italy and T5 in Holland and it wouldn’t surprise me in he carried it on for another week.

Paul Casey did us a great turn in the KLM Open three weeks ago after the birth of his first child. He didn’t do too well the following week in Wales but that was probably to be expected after the previous two weeks.

Now he’s had a week off it’s time to get back in the groove. His stats aren’t as good as they were last year but he seems to like the Dunhill format with four top-10 finishes so I'll have a small wager each way.

Eddie Pepperell has had a great run over the past five tournaments, finishing in the top five four times. Last year in this event he finished T26 with some impressive scoring (66, 67, 69 and 72) for a minus 14 at the first time of asking. The 23-year-old has had an up and down season so far and hopefully he’ll continue on the up with a top-six finish this week.

Another player who has been notching up good results recently is Tommy Fleetwood. He finished T2 in Wales and T5 in both the European Masters and the Czech Masters. His driving accuracy is 66.42 and GIR 71.9 both improved from last year and he’s another English youngster beginning to make a name for himself.

He is 19th on the European from 22 tournaments and could be up there. He’s finished fifth twice in the last three years at this event so is well worth a punt.
