FOR the second year running I was lucky enough to pick The Open champion.

Twelve months ago I tipped Ernie Els and this time Phil Mickelson was one of the three outright selections I recommended last Wednesday.

Mickelson, whose display in winning on the Castle Stuart links course last week convinced me he could triumph at Muirfield, left it late before a masterful four-birdie blast in the final six holes eased him clear of the likes of Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood and Adam Scott.

So it was a good day for anyone who took my advice and backed the left-handed American at 25-1.

Ladbrokes say Mickelson's win cost them £8million. He touched 20-1 during in-play betting at the start of the final round.

After Westwood's disappointment the firm now make him odds on at 2-7 to never win a Major during his career but for the optimists out there it's a 5-2 chance he finally gets his hands on at least one.

The Englishman will take heart from the way Scott bounced back from last week's crash at Royal Lytham to win the US Masters. Westwood's putting and short game was improved and I wouldn't write him off.

Ladbrokes spokesperson Jessica Bridge said: “Mickelson's win has hit us hard but in hindsight it seemed inevitable the Westwood choke would make an appearance. We think this was Westy's best hope for a Major but the odds now firmly suggest he'll never get his hands on one.”

U Record boys are always on jollies!!! ;-) think ya should be alright to bust a ton there Paul, Muirfield a different kettle of fish tho!! Quite an incredible round when all’s said and done..best score of the week in the toughest conditions and when it really mattered on that back nine. Delighted for him..a gentleman all round decent fella with obvious great family and values behing him. great role model. If u look at the winners at Muirfiled over the years, only great champions manage to win there..a worth member to join the club! :-)
