If Luton Town were under any illusions how tough life in the Premier League was going to be, a 4-1 defeat at Brighton on the opening day of the season was as big a wake-up call as you can imagine.
Things don’t get any easier tonight with a trip to London against a Chelsea side desperate for a home win.
You have to go back to March for the Blues’ last victory at Stamford Bridge, nine games ago, in a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Last season was write-off for Chelsea but this campaign hasn’t got off to a very auspicious start.
The 1-1 draw with Liverpool offered some hope, some light at the end of the tunnel but the oncoming train arrived in the shape of a 3-1 defeat at West Ham.
Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t too despondent with his team’s performance but he’s going to have to get results soon to justify the £900m spent on the squad since Todd Boehly bought the club.
Contrast that level of cash with the pocket-money budget at Luton and we might just have the biggest gulf in squad value / spend the Premier League has ever seen.
The bookies have Chelsea as 3/10 favourites to pick up the three points with the Hatters at 10/1.
This a game where Chelsea should see plenty of the ball. They dominated possession in defeat at the London Stadium (76%) and had the lion’s share against Liverpool (65%), winning nine and four corners respectively. They’re even money to take eight or more corners this evening which might be a better angle than backing them to win at short odds.
Raheem Sterling earned pass marks against West Ham and won a penalty that was subsequently missed by Enzo Fernandez. The England striker is 7/5 to find the net tonight.

Fancy Chelsea to cut lose tonight, against a Luton team who must have realised in the first 45 minutes of there opening game how tough it’s going to be this season.
I thought Chelsea actually played quite well last week despite the 3-1 loss to West Ham, and even in spells against Liverpool they were the better team.
Luton were put to the sword in there match versus Brighton, and were probably lucky to have only conceded just the 4 goals.
With from what I have seen so far I’m happy to play over 2 Chelsea goals and Over 2 Chelsea corners at 23/20 with Bet365.
I think any team in the Prem who visit Brighton will have a tough game no matter how well established they are. The problem for Chelsea is who’s going to score the goals they have 35 players on the books and no world class striker, players on 8 year contracts to get round financial fairplay rules, players only there for the money. The Americans are running the club into the ground because they don’t know how to run a football club.
Due to rain loads of the matches at the US open have yet to be completed from yesterday. Raining again today so not sure how many will be played. Will post the full results when all finished.
