Tuesdays Football Bet of the Day see’s me focus on the Champions League qualifiers. First up a match that looks good for goals and then a match in which the home side should secure a comfortable victory.
Genk vs Shakhtar Donetsk
🇪🇺 UEFA Champions League
⏰ Tuesday 3rd August, 19:00
Genk host Shakhtar Donetsk at the Luminus Arena this evening in the first leg of this 3rd round qualifier. This is both sides first games in Europe this season.
Genk come into this games suffering a 3-4 defeat at home to Oostende in a topsy turvy game in which they were infront 2-0 and 3-2 before conceding a late couple of goals. Prior to that defeat, Genk had drew 1-1 with Standard Liege and lost 3-2 to last seasons champions Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup. Genk were leagues top goal scorers (82) in the league last year but also conceded 53 goals.
Shakhtar come into this winning their first two domestic games this as they look to win back their league crown which Dynamo Kiev took off them last year. Shakhtar competed in last years champions league and done the double over Real Madrid before finishing 3rd in the group and finally getting knocked out in the last 16 of the Europa League against Roma. New manager Roberto Di Zerbi was known for his attacking style at Sassuolo and majority of his sides games were open and full of goals.
PSV vs Midtjylland
🇪🇺 UEFA Champions League
⏰ Tuesday 3rd August, 19:00
PSV host Midtjylland at the Phillips Stadion this evening in the first leg of this 3rd round qualifier. PSV knocked out Turkish side Galatasaray in the last round whereas Midtjylland edged past Scottish runners up Celtic.
PSV come into this after thrashing Turkish giants Galatasaray 7-2 on aggregate. PSV won the first leg 5-1 at the Phillips Stadion before winning 1-2 in Istanbul despite playing the last 20 minutes with 10 men. PSV were superb at home last season and won 16 of their 21 home games last season in both the Eredivisie and the Europa League including 3 out 4 in the latter. 14 of those wins saw the Eindhoven side score at least 2 goals.
Midtjylland come into this defeating Viborg 0-2 in the Danish Superliga at the weekend to make it back to back wins domestically. In the previous round, it took Midtjylland until extra time to finally defeat Celtic and win the tie 3-2. I watched both games and if truth be told neither side impressed me at all. Midtjylland did compete in last seasons Champions League but claimed only two points and suffered defeats in both games against fellow Dutch side Ajax (3-1 & 1-2).
Bet of the Day
Both Genk and Shakhtar are attack minded sides and I see this being an open and entertaining match in which both sides should score. PSV arguably achieved the most eye catching result in the last round against Galatasaray and I see them them being too strong at home to Midtjylland.
