Saturday’s Football Bet of the Day sees me focus on the Scottish Premiership and in particular the match involving my side Rangers. Whilst they may be too short just to win, I’ve added in a goals and cards angle to form a very solid looking bet builder.
Rangers vs St Johnstone
🏴 Premiership
⏰ Saturday 13th August, 15:00
After reaching the Champions League play-off round on Tuesday, Rangers draw their attention back to league duty on Saturday and will look to go top of the Scottish Premiership table, as they host St Johnstone at Ibrox.
After a disappointing 2-0 defeat in Belgium in the first-leg, Rangers won 3-0 at Ibrox on Tuesday to complete an impressive comeback and they will now do battle with PSV for a place in the Champions League group-stages. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have won both of their opening two league fixtures, firstly coming from behind to defeat Livingston away, before a comfortable 2-0 victory over newly-promoted Kilmarnock last weekend. The Gers have now won 12 of their last 14 Scottish Premiership matches at Ibrox (W12-D1-L1), with their sole defeat in that run coming against bitter-rivals Celtic. In their last 20 league matches at Ibrox, Rangers have conceded just 12 goals, keeping 12 clean clean sheets. In all 19 of their league fixtures at home last season, as well as their one this season, Rangers have saw their opponents collect multiple cards in every single match.
It was a difficult season for St Johnstone last season, as they finished in 11th position and only stayed up by defeating Inverness CT in the play-offs. Callum Davidson’s side opened up their campaign by losing a late goal to lose 0-1 at home to Hibernian, before defeating then manager-less Motherwell 1-2 with a stoppage-time winner of their own. Only Aberdeen (12) and relegated Dundee (10) collected fewer points on their travels than St Johnstone (15) last season, whilst no side scored fewer than the nine they mustered on the road. The Saints collected multiple cards in 76% of their league fixtures this season and have already collected seven in their opening two league outings this season.
Bet of the Day
Rangers have a crucial match against PSV at Ibrox on Tuesday but first, they face St Johnstone at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon and know a win will take them top. As well as winning both of their opening league fixtures, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have won 12 of their last 14 league fixtures at Ibrox and should be too strong for a St Johnstone side who are likely to struggle this season and who lost all six matches against the Old Firm last season.
22/27 of The Gers victories last season, as well as both of their opening two this season have featured fewer than five goals and given St Johnstone (24) were the lowest scorers in the Scottish Premiership last season and coupled up with the high temperatures, I’m happy to add in under five goals along with a Rangers victory. To complete the bet builder, I’m happy to add in The Saints to collect at least two cards, a selection that’s landed in each of Rangers’ last 20 league fixtures at Ibrox and in 31 of St Johnstone’s last 40 league fixtures.
